I had to type it exactly like that; it's the rules.

I found a river in Cyberpunk, by the way. Excited to tell you about it.

Can't wait for the "how many of Mario Kart World's population are employed and how many are driving just for fun" video

YouTube, I like this video and the creator very much.  You should show it to more 60-year-old women like me.  Thanks for your time!

Austin is a modern follower of the "derrivé". In the 1920s the French Situationists would go for a random jaunt through a city, going places they wouldn't normally go in order to capture a sense of strangeness and wonder.

making a fake ‘poor-side-of-town’ for the royalty of a world to race through sounds like the most billionaire thing ive ever heard

"I'll show you 2 more places; 3 if you're good"
From this I can deduce that either:
- The third place was the opportunity to find interest in the mundane in real life
- The third place was Sky Garden from Super Circuit
- I wasn't good :(

20:17 "hey fish make a video about the boats."

Fishs video about the boats "Hey human, make a video about the planes."

8:49 "I really didn’t appreciate the first planet until I saw the second one. The moon is so scarred, so desolate, so monotonous, that I cannot recall its tortured surface without thinking of the infinite variety the delightful planet earth offers"  –Michael Collins (CMP, Apollo 11)

When everyone’s complaining about how there’s nothing to do in this open world, I’m thinking “well there’s one guy I know who will love that!”

Game developer here who's done bookshelves both ways! There's actually a lot of ways it can be done for both styles. For 3D models, you can render high def individual books or you can just color a rectangle and call it a book. Alternatively depending on the art style you can either draw a bunch of flat rectangles (like your example) or fully render with shadows a realistic looking texture. A texture can be so good you can't tell its not a model at first, especially if its got lighting maps on it to make it "look" 3D. Personally, I hate drawing books. So much so that I made a custom brush in my art app to draw them for me. I prefer 3D if I already have the assets made to copy paste.

@15:15 Game developer here, specifically I'm an Environment artist who does this kinda stuff- It depends! There's a lot of factors at play that can determine which is easier/more intensive. For this specific scenario, it likely was easier as they likely created what is called Trim Sheets that are to put it simply, tilable textures layered on a single texture to save memory/speed up workflows. (Speculatory because I don't know nintendo's process) but they likely had a trim sheet texture just for this area of the game and made all the textures at once

Edit/add Your videos are awesome and a lot of us devs watch haha

2:40 "we'll leave the rest of the infrastructure analysis for another video"

The desperate hope that this is a teaser for one he's working on.

Thank you for not picking up Nabbit's money under his bridge. He probably has a family to feed.

The biome boundary reminds me of that “you will always know where the Netherlands begins” tweet showing a photo of a poorly-maintained road suddenly turning into a cleaner looking road with bike lanes.
Rather than thinking of Bowser’s lands as neglected, though, I like to imagine Bowser and his minions as going to great effort to maintain that “desolate wasteland” look.

20:07 he mentioned the fish!

Your videos have really helped me rediscover the way I thought as a child. I was around 8-ish years old when my dad started playing World of Warcraft. It's been 18 years since then and I'm still an avid player and fan, but I don't play it anymore like I used to. As a kid there was so much joy in the mundane discoveries, finding these odd, empty, hilly areas that, mechanically, don't do anything at all, but are technically accessible. I would spend hours finding slopes I could climb up to see the places the game didn't want to show me, not because it was hiding anything, but because there was nothing to see. There was a profound enjoyment in just sitting on a boat and letting it take you from one port to the other and back again.

The joy of discovery is one we all too often let ourselves forget, but I think it's one of the truest joys there is. Even if there's nothing to actually discover, there's a fascination to looking where you aren't 'supposed to'.

Mario Kart World satisfies my favorite Mario Kart pastime, which I like to call “Bowser Drives To Work”. You pick Bowser (or anyone, it’s just the most funny when it’s Bowser), go into Trial Mode, and then very slowly drive pretending that you are driving to work.

Mario Kart World is the best for playing Bowser Drives to Work, because free roam lets you drive anywhere as slowly as you want! And there are details that add to this mundane but also fun experience, like the NPC drivers actually using their turn signal and parking in the parking lot

Austin: "crown city could imply there's poor people in mario"
Paper mario ttyd: "He doesn't know"

the distinction between moo moo meadows and moo moo farm should be respected

This man's entire career has been leading up to the release of this game: all this stuff was made for him and no one else.
