When Southwest started, they had 4 planes and three routes. They flew between Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. They charged $20 while Braniff and Texas International charged $26. There were no reservations, and they operated as a cash-only airline. You walked up to the gate, gave them $20, and got a receipt that was your boarding pass. Those were the days.

As an Aussie I'll give my answer to the question of "Will the Australian public forgive Qantas?". I used to fly Qantas, domestic and international, on average 29 times a year from 2002-2020 and members of my team flew over 350 times each year. Since 2020 I have only flown Qantas 7 times in 6 years... and yes, I let my Qantas booking co-ordinator know exactly why I and my team were no longer willing to pay the extra cost to support our flag carrier when they failed so badly to support their staff and regular customers when they could afford to.

What Joyce did to QANTAS is a bloody disgrace. He should be ashamed and should have been ousted long before he dipped out. He shouldn't have been given a single cent in his severance package considering the condition he left the company.
That's this Australian's opinion.

Absolutely love the Long Haul videos! Great sleep space content (and I mean that in the best possible way!)

I flew Southwest (against my will LOL) a few months ago and was thrilled they were going to be moving to assigned seats. That’s probably my biggest issue I have with them. It’s so inefficient for boarding for one thing. Maybe I’ll have to stop referring to them as Southworst LOL. Thanks for the vid!

Ryanair wasn't always the low cost behemoth it now is. Prior to adopting it's low cost model it was on the verge of bankruptcy, Following a visit to Southwest Airlines in the early 1990's by then Ryanair CFO Michael O'Leary, the airline adopted a "no-frills" strategy centered on extreme operational efficiency and aggressive cost-cutting along the Southwest business model.

I miss the legacy carriers. They actually fed you, and there was a lot more leg room.

Petter, do you know about the UK's first budget airline, "Laker Airways"?? It operated between 1966 - 1982

When the southwest incident happened, I was personally at the airport(ramp agent) and witnessed what they did
They took all of the southwest crew and put them in a big conference room and told them all to work out amongst themselves who had the most and least time available and put themselves in a line from least time available till most time available from there, someone in charge of scheduling or whatever walked in and handed them all paperwork for whatever flight they were going to. I don’t think a single pilot kept the original schedule that day.

I'm really shocked at how crappy Qantas has been behaving. That's something I imagine an American carrier to do. Now I really understand why so many Australians are outright pissed at them.
