My bf thinks I'm weird for relaxing (slightly disturbed even?) to airplane crash videos before bed. But it's so much better than doom scrolling and SO informative. Fantastic voice and content for relaxing. Super big fan of mentour pilot longhaul.

16:06 Number 2 Engine casually resting on the runway:

“Confirmed, I have been cut off”

I can imagine the face of Nationwide 723 pilots when they saw a whole ass engine dissappear from the fucking wing

@deancyrus1 10 months ago

22:07 maybe if someone had told them the engine was completely missing they might have thought that transferring fuel was a bad idea.

Never forget the Olympic save in Italy. That pilot flew only 42 feet over a town and were able to not only save the plane and passengers, but pull of the impossible as they couldn’t save the plane in the sim

@HardRockFever 6 months ago

Wow 51:40 I figured the pilot died because every video I’ve seen on YouTube where the pilot had a medical emergency that forced a passenger to land a plane has died before this story. If he does survive he got lucky twice

On the Nationwide engine-off story; I live in Cape Town, and used to fly to Johannesburg quite often for work. When I complained that I had not been on that flight, and missed the excitement of the engine falling off, several of my colleagues emailed my boss and refused to fly anywhere with me. I don't know why.

As per Flight 1549, there were multiple simulator attempts to get the plane to an airport, and all crashed.

I get a lump in my throat every time I listen to that recording of Cactus 1549. Incredible.

I have 2 hrs before my flight, thanks for saving me from doom scrolling 😂

13:31passenger turns to other passenger: “did you see the ENGINE FALL OFF THE WING” “don’t worry, these planes can fly with one engine.” … 👀 😳

I have to say, I'm impressed that for all the new tech in these planes the lay out of "grab wheel, turn it left to fly left, turn it right to fly right, back for up and forward for down" is so easy to grasp that a passenger can use it.

As a former employee of the NY Port Authority, I want to commend and recognize how quickly you see three large NYPA ferries on the scene of the "Miracle on the Hudson" and the absolute professionalism and expediency with which their entire command structure reacted.

NYC remembers Rescue 3 - Never forget.

@stevekirk8546 11 months ago

The Miracle on the Hudson was amazing but the ATC were also superb, calm and suportive but still had time to contact the ferry boats in the area where the ditching was going to happen which enabled them to arrive on scene and with great skilll wrere able to save all those lives.

Props to Harrison, we all like to think that if shtf we'll keep a cool head, but until you have been in a few life threatening situations which required decision making, you just never know. Harrison appreciated quickly that he was the best man to get the job done, by remaining calm he gave everyone the best chance they had.

On first story: I think the Greenhorn 1st pilot is a natural. Amazing how he was compensating for the missing engine like a pro. Also, even though he didn’t get an award he has this on his experience resume. I think he even impressed the very veteran captain.
Hope he is having a good career, especially since this happened to him at a young age of 25!
Plus the ATC awareness was very impressive and the airport staff were hero’s too for speedy clean up of the runway to prepare for emergency landing. They all should have been awarded too for team performance.
I applaud them all.

If you had told me that I would be thoroughly educated and entertained while voluntarily watching a two-hour video, I would have questioned your sanity. But here I am, two hours later and have been both educated and entertained, and enjoyed every moment of the experience. Thank you, Petter and crew. Apparently you guys know what I need better than I do.

"talented and calm, resourceful people" - what a lovely descriptive and accurate phrase in the circumstances. May we always have such people in our corner!

@charlotteinnocent8752 11 months ago

The ability to remain calm seems to be a common thread for excellence. Way to keep cool all these pilots!

I did get my private and night endorsement years ago and was really an aviation enthusiast then,the most amazing flight that was saved from absolute destruction was the A330 flown by DHL out of Baghdad that was shot by a missile by terrorists after take off and they lost all hydraulic fluid,they miraculously landed,amazing miracle!
