No matter under what circumstances, getting a jet airliner into the air without any fuel indication at all is nothing but insane!

It would be cool if you did Long-Haul episodes about
* Helicopter incidents.
* Prop Plane incidents.
* Ego-Driven mistakes (You might have something like this).
* Coincidence Driven incidents
* Water Landings
* Subtle Sabotage
* CRM breakdown
* Proximity incidents.... accidents that happen in close temporal proximity to others, how they might have changed - influenced the next incident negatively.
* Icing incidents?

Let's play the Mentour Pilot drinking game. Take a shot every time:

For many years, here in the US, I worked at race tracks around the country as a corner worker. A very good friend of mine, from Winnipeg, came down here to work with us. John was at Gimli when the plane landed. That weekend they were actually having a road race, not a drag race. Where they landed was actually on the drag strip, but it was not active that weekend. Cool story

I drive one of my cars to Gimli from Winnipeg to race regularly. This story of the Gimli Glider is legendary. Good old "Scare Canada" never ceases to amaze.

I'd heard of the Gimli Glider but didn't know of the details. Thanks to the Mentour crew for this story.

It was such a nuisance it had to be stated twice!

I still love the Gimli glider story, even after watching it many times - Petter, you're an ace storyteller :)

Im a maintenance engineer and intermittent Faults are a nightmare and if you can’t replicate the fault and you don’t have a spare, what can you except not use it. Also everything is fine always at the mercy of physics.

Oh I'm so glad to get your perspective on gimli glider I think this one is tied as one of my favorites as far as an incident with a positive outcome
I know most of these from the NTSB mayday air disasters side of things so it's really cool to see your perspective on a favor at 1:00

I saw an interview where the copilot/first officier was talking about the Gimli sideslip manoeuvre. Although he knew what the captain was doing, even he was fairly scared, saying the passengers must have been terrified. It was a stupid error that caused the incident, followed by a brilliant piece of airmanship and problem solving without panic

They were incredibly lucky, that the old landing site existed and it was used for an even that day, but by sheer dumb luck no one of the visitors (incl. children on bicycles) was hurt.

The Gimli Glider story still makes me chuckle, even after years of knowing about it. Since I have next to no knowledge of Canadian geography, my association with the name was a slightly different one 😅.
(And then a small voice in my keeps chanting: don’t toss it, don’t toss it 😂)

Wowww!!! What hero pilots!!! The glider story!

They were asking a AirBus to do weird things that incur restrictions, but it basically did it. You could hurt the control surfaces maybe by going to fast at high attack. They can actually find bugs in the software if they did things no one expected.
