The captain is also the hero. He was able to open the cockpit door that allowed other passengers to come inside to stop the terrorist.

It’s becoming rapidly clear to me that the Captain did an amazing job of fighting off the first officer attack, so much so that he was able to keep his composure enough to get a squawk code in twice, and was able to get the door open to get some help inside the cockpit.  I’m thinking he knew that there was a deadhead crew in the back (at my airline it’s customary to stick your head into the cockpit and say “hi” to the operating crew just to let them know you are on the airplane).  

Another thing, is that just flying a 737 with NO rudder, let alone recovering from something wild like this, then wow!

Regarding the weapon….  Well, keep in mind that at some point we have to just trust the pilots, because at the end of the day they have the ultimate weapon of the aircraft itself.  Rather than focusing on weapons, we should be focusing on how to properly screen them from the job in the first place.  I can think of 3 of these events off the top of my head.  Egypt Air, German Wings, and now this one.  This is the only one that had a weapon involved, and interestingly was “thwarted” to a better ending than the other two.

Glad the outcome was successful for these people!  But the hate between these people is out of control.

A movie will be made about this. The actions of the captain, cabin crew, and passengers were nothing less than heroic.

This is why I don't think it is a good idea for airlines to ever go to 1 pilot if they ever automate flying completely.

(PILOT-NOT STABBING and PILOT STABBING)
