After many accidents at Tenerife, I find it quite unforgivable that there was STILL no radar there..

Oh, the sinking feeling I get whenever Petter says, "Which might be worth remembering."

"Tenerife" is like a sleeper agent in anyone who's into aviation. You can really tell if someone is well-versed in aviation history by saying that one word.

While I'm not a pilot or aircrew, I'm a retired US Navy Chief, so I was a professional sailor. The two things that scared me most were fire and weather. Fortunately I was never on a ship which had a serious fire, but I've ridden out a bunch of storms. The North Atlantic in winter is not a pleasant or safe place to be.

The Spanish dialect of the Canary Islands omits the pronunciation of the "s" at the end of Spanish words. I wonder if that explains the missing "s" here as well.

I have always said to everyone „ the only stupid question is, the one you never asked“ and another one „ if not sure, always ask before doing. Because, some things can’t be undone if done wrong“

1:28:18 Man, major recognition to your simulator guy for representing friendly pilot banter by nodding the camera up and down haha. I absolutely love that 😄

Avianca was basically killed by the first officer.

This whole episode: “throws popcorn at computer” NOOOOO. NOOOO. DON’T DO THAT! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Trust your gut. Always. If it feels weird, it probably is.

Perfect timing to settle down for an afternoon nap

I travelled to Athens from London/Gatwick twice in the early Eighties, on both occasions friends used to point out Danair aircraft on the taxi-way and call them 'DanDare'.
It was a popular joke at the time.
The second time we left for Athens in 1984 there was a delay due to problems with a 'DanDare' flight due to leave before us. By all accounts the problem was that the nose-cone had become detached. I actually saw ground-staff gaffer-taping the nose-cone back on prior to take-off.
True story.

A new Mentour Long Haul video is always a nice treat and a great way to spend my Sunday evening.

Trying to be polite does not always work. Be assertive when necessary 😢.

Tenerife again? Shocking...

I loved flying on Dan Air, the staff were always friendly and due to the destination it was always the 727. I have said it before, best ever flight on an airline was Majorca to LGW. I visited the flight deck as we approached landfall over the Mediterranean. Chatting to the crew, it turned out that the first officer had trained on PA28s at Liverpool as I had. I was invited to pull out the jump seat and strap in. The views and experience were fantastic and unforgettable. Holding a CAA R/T Licence, I was trained on IFR comes, listening in enhanced the experience. It was strange coming out of the flight deck as the passengers disembarked, I had to wait to retrieve my bag and jacket. The party I was with were surprised to see where I was as they didn't know I was up there.

Seems like the Avianca FO REALLY didn't want to use the word "EMERGENCY". Makes me wonder if the company had some sort of penalty attached to its use.🤔

Dan Air may have made an early plane automation record fairly recently before that accident. According to a computer magazine (probably Byte) which I read in 1979 or possibly 1980, Dan Air had been the first carrier to issue its pilots with programmable electronic calculators (IIRC by HP or TI), which they could use at pilot's discretion to optimise routing and fuel loading on medium & long haul flights, to safely minimise fuel use (I have no evidence, but Byte was a well-respected geek's magazine).

The one with the low fuel emergency is truly terrifying. So many lives lost, partly because the way that the pilots were trained to speak doesn't match what air traffic controller expects to hear pilots speak.

Under the stress they had been experiencing, perhaps they couldn't think of anything other than to fall back on their training.

As I said before watching this one completely, and assuming I could reject an aircraft without career consequences, I wouldn't want to take one with no auto pilot and glitchy flight controls specifically on approach.

I'm responsible for all the passengers' lives, my crew and myself in that order. Rejecting an aircraft has to be something I'm willing to do. Of course, I'm an armchair pilot. it's easy to be all moral when I'm safely behind my keyboard.

I remember this, i think it was the late 80s. I was at LaGuardia waiting on a flight to NC. My pager was lit up with friends and family. Dig the channel, thanks!
