Do we need a 'Get your feet off the brakes' voice allert?

2 things I've learned from Juan.

1. You can stall an aircraft at any speed but only one critical angle of attack.

2. Keep your feet off the damn brakes.

4km is long enough for me to take off by flapping my arms.

I admit it. I did that once taxiing on a dirt field. It took lots of power, I thought I was stuck in the mud. Had the parking brake on. Looked like I ploughed the taxi way. My call sign was 'Farmer John' for about a year after that.

Another fine example of Juan's extensive knowledge and experience, especially for us non-pilots.  He presents the material so everyone can understand.

This time the praise goes to the engineers of the plane and the planners of the runway that accommodated an error margin big enough for such dumbassery

I felt one of my pilots dragging the brakes during a takeoff (corporate jet). I asked about his foot position and he said he had his heels on the bottom of the pedals and "pulled" the ball of his foot back to prevent hitting the brakes. Obviously, this wasn't working. I was taught the technique described by Juan - heels on floor, balls of feet on bottom of the pedals (I was taught by a tail wheel pilot who understood brakes). Anyway, after this incident, I took a poll and most of the guys did it the way this guy did claiming they could "get to the brakes faster" if needed. Clearly this is being taught by some flight schools as the proper technique. I disagree.

Boeing engineering saves the day... that actually feels nice to say.

If you need to tell commercial pilots, flying airliners with hundreds of souls onboard, how to operate rudder pedals....we are screwed

I bet that gear was smoking hot when it was retracted into the plane. luckily it didn't catch fire...

A lot of people were saying there's no way someone was dumb enough to be riding the brakes. I don't have that much faith in people. There's no limit to the dumb things people can do.

Between this incident, and that ludicrous accident by 21Air in Miami, it is baffling that professional airline pilots have such serious lapses in basic airmanship.  This is concerning.

Following the 2001 AA A-300 crash out of JFK due to the FO dancing on the rudder pedals too enthusiastically, Airbus added an obnoxiously loud “Stop rudder input” warning when a pilot was detected using the rudder pedals inappropriately. Maybe all airliners need a “Stop brake input!” aural warning to cover inadvertently dragging the brakes.

@blancolirio the hyperactive rudder inputs are to be expected with feet up on the brakes, as each rudder input will result in excessive yaw from rudder + brake.  The same then occurs in the opposite direction during the attempted correction and the problem keeps getting worse.  Over-correction begets over-correction. Think of it like directional P.I.O.

All that experience in that cockpit and taking off like that is extremely troubling.

The longer I’m in this industry the less trust I have and realize there are some seriously deficient pilots who have somehow made their way in the left seat of wide-body jets

On the bright side, It's a teachable moment for flight crews without a catastrophic outcome.

I'm certain those were not the only skid marks left "behind".

I can probably give some understanding of why a 64 year old Captain with 27,000 hours experience was dragging the brakes. I am 65 retired and I have had for years problems with my lower legs and feet. At night they spasm and the tissues of the feet get hard so that I have to put noxema on them to soften them so my toes can move otherwise they disturb my sleep. I do not have complete control of the functions of my feet and lower legs and this may have been a factor in why the Captain had his feet on the brakes. He may have lost some function in his lower limbs and he may not have felt that his toes were on the brake part of the Rudder Pedals. Just something to investigate.

12:32 a down gear is a happy gear!😂
