That same bald pilot is in so many of these videos. If I see him in the cockpit I'm not getting on the plane.

Every time I'm on a plane and the attendants finish the safety briefing, I hear Petter's voice saying "...and that's worth keeping in mind."

Huge respect to Don Bateman, grandfather of the most terrifying alert sound a pilot could hear. TERRAIN. TERRAIN. PULL UP.

Retired controller here. This crash was well known to us as it created our “bible” (as another poster mentioned) that is still used today. Unfortunately, many of the procedures written into the 7110.65 were written in blood as they were the outcome of crashes like this. I also was involved in safety for many years and had the pleasure of meeting Don Bateman while he was working on the enhanced GPWS and flew with him on a demonstration. Great and very interesting gentleman.

re 32:30 "anything that gives you that feeling in your stomach"
This is exactly what Capt. Ernest K Gann writes about in "Fate is the Hunter," a classic aviation book from 1961. In chapter 1, he recounts correcting his altitude by fifty feet in the black of night, for no good reason... because he felt uneasy... and seconds later thereby avoided a dead certain mid-air. Because he felt uneasy, identified the feeling, and promptly acted on it, he and all the others lived.
Quite a book, and quite a lesson.

I was stationed at USCG Yorktown Tracen at the time of this crash. I remember it well because my cousin wrote me a letter in December that I didn't receive until February. It was delivered to me in a US Post Office envelop via the MAA and required a signature. I didn't know what it was so it concerned me. When I opened it another envelop was inside that was torn and muddy with the letter that my cousin had sent. A letter of explanation was alongside my cousins letter stating that it had been found at the crash sight of 514 and was gathered up and sent to me. For some reason it made me pause and realize that nearly 100 people died in the crash that delayed and damaged that letter from my cousin I was holding in my hand. I still have that letter.

Modern high-profile accidents probably get more clicks, but accidents like this, which fundamentally defined aviation safety, are arguably more important to cover.

I am not a pilot and don’t have any plans of becoming one. But watching your videos has made me a much better educated passenger. 😊

35:01 "I had ground contact a minute ago" -- this one should trigger immediate action 😨

A few months ago I watched a video about this horrible plane accident and there was a news reporter at that time who stated something like, “No one important died in this accident.” Let THAT sink in.

The 1970s were a bloody time in aviation. So many safety systems we take for granted half a century on were written in blood in the 1970s.

Its a testament to how well Petter's videos are researched that my first reaction to hearing Dulles pronounced like that was to wonder if I've been saying it wrong for my whole life

I rode my motorcycle past that site a few months later and saw that the aircraft was brought to a stop by a (natural) large rock wall/outcropping. Maybe it would not have been quite so bad had it just crashed through the trees. Video didn't mention that a "secret" gov complex was "exposed" because of this accident. Their emergency personnel were the first responders. When I rode my motorcycle around the Bull Run and Blue Ridge mts back then I would wonder what was at the end of those nice paved roads up the mountainside that ended at a big steel door - very much like the door on "SG-1" series!

This accident sounds similar to the Norwegian Air Force Hercules plane that crashed into Sweden's highest mountain in 2012 due to a similar misunderstanding between ATC and aircrew. It would be interesting if Petter could cover that accident, and how something like that could still occur so many years later.

I can't overemphasize how much I do not want my pilot characterizing a landing as "sporty."

As a retired controller from Los Angeles ARTCC, I now work at Washington ARTCC as an instructor. I remember being briefed on issuing approach clearances and reading about this crash as the impetus for the change from the old 7110.8 to the current "Bible of Air Traffic Control" the 7110.65. Many of my fellow trainers here at Washington Center grew up and started their careers in the shadow of the Mt. Weather crash. In fact you can still, to this day, see the scars on the mountain. I drive to work from Winchester to Leesburg on route 7 just north of the flight path of TWA514 and right past Mt. Weather and Round Hill.
By the way, Our current lesson on approach clearances makes it quite clear that you MUST issue an altitude to maintain (if on a vector to intercept) or to cross at or above the IAF or established on the approach. Something such as "Cross Round Hill at or above 3400, cleared VOR/DME runway 12 approach."

I remember this crash very well. My grandmother had died just hours earlier, and all day there were television reports of the accident. The weather that weekend had been really unsettled. The previous day was rainy and weirdly warm. Upon waking up on that Sunday morning, I was shocked to see everything covered in snow. My folks were sitting on their bed talking. I knew immediately that Grandma was gone. She had been ill for some time, and her death was expected. The poor souls on that plane were simply torn from life in an instant.

As a local resident, now living under the point your map marks as "pilots discussed dumping fuel," I remember that crash, the eerie feeling I got that caused me to turn on the TV late that evening and the bulletins that started flowing in a rush as journalists picked up on emergency services transmissions. Thank you for revisiting the lessons learned. When I walk my dog before bed, I look over Peggy's Cove to the skies where this ended. I often reflect on the human tragedy and the need to, as you remind us, always keep events like this in mind.
