90 seconds. NINETY SECONDS! That's all the time they had to get everyone off that plane before the smoke and flames killed everyone remaining onboard. It took NINE MINUTES for you to describe everything that happened. It's amazing that the crew was able to save so many people in that short a time span.

R.I.P. Barbara Jane Harrison.

35:42 No one would have criticized her at this moment if she had just jumped and saved herself. At the age of 22 years old, she continued to keep saving lives.

Disabled lives in disasters like this are almost never considered in escape plans. The fact that Harrison went back in an attempt to save someone who was never in mind when these escape measures were designed has me sobbing. She deserves the recognition of a national hero, as do the rest of the cabin crew who managed to save an incredible number of people from a nearly hopeless situation

Flight attendants aren't there to serve you coffeee, they're rescue personnel who serve you coffee when there's no rescuing to do.

The fact the pilot nailed the landing amidst all that chaos is amazing.

I’m glad you made an exception to your usual rule about not naming crew members. Barbra Jane Harrison stands an example to all of us.

Jumping off the plane without the slide properly inflated was badass too. Props to the whole crew. They are heroes.

What I find heartwarming is Barbara Jane Harrison was posthumously awarded the the George Cross for her role in the evacuation, one of only four women to be awarded the GC, the only woman to be awarded the GC during peacetime and only civilian woman to be awarded the GC. It’s heartbreaking that she lost her life but I’m really glad her memory was honoured to such a high degree.

Oh this story made me sob like a little infant. It is great to have a reminder that people like Barbara Harrison existed. Fly high angel, you deserve those wings.

Not all heros wear capes, but Barbara Harrison certainly earned her wings 💕

Rest in peace sweet girl, your sacrifice not only saved lives but made an impact that will last forever

My dad was a Boeing engineer for 30 years and loved your videos. He passed about a year ago, and whenever I watch one of your videos, it makes me smile to think how much he would have enjoyed it.

What always brings me to tears about this accident is that Barbara Jane Harrison went back to help the woman in the wheelchair. My mother has used a wheelchair since I was a small child, so hearing that part of this story hits close to home. With societal attitudes toward disabled people at the time of the accident (and arguably today as well), I would not have been surprised to hear if the passenger was considered a lost cause and left onboard the aircraft. It means a lot to me that Barbara Jane Harrison made the conscious choice to go back to try and save her anyway, even though it cost her her life.

As a 63 year old man, I’m not ashamed to admit that the flight attendants selfless action reduced me to tears. How many of us would have had the courage to stand in the face of fire?

@SalPerez-io3mz 10 months ago

Damn. She was a warrior. She died with honour. RIP. I want to be as brave as her. 🙏

I sobbed. Barbara Harrison is an amazing hero. Incredible bravery

As a flight attendant, it annoys me that people will ignore our demonstrations or get snippy when we ask them to move things for safety reasons. But I would hope that if I was ever in a situation like this I would be as professional and brave as Barbara, she's a role model for how crew should be!

@curbyourshi1056 10 months ago (edited)

I have never, ever heard about an in-flight emergency where the cabin crew have performed anything less than exceptional, regardless of the eventual outcome. They're the unsung heroes of aviation. Barbara Jane Harrison was exemplary in her relentless bravery and selflessness. RIP.

The second officer on BOAC 712 was John Hutchinson, who would go on to fly the 747, VC-10 and finally Concorde until his retirement in the 90s. He's been featured in many Concorde documentaries.

ALWAYS take a couple of minutes before the plane takes off to figure out a primary exit and a secondary exit closest to your seat. Count the rows you will have to pass to reach each one. Write them down or repeat them several times. Before the aircraft begins the final approach to landing, review them again. If you need to evacuate, you may be doing it in choking, blinding smoke and you may not be able to see. You will be surrounded by panicked people. You will probably never need the information, but if you do, those couple of minutes can save your life. In aircraft fire evacuation, where not everyone survives, people who had this simple habit survived. It only takes a few minutes.
