I have aspergers and one of my kids too and I'm not offended at all. My motto is, what can't be joked about neither can be taken seriously. A joke is a vent, not an attack.

I’m Australian and my father owned a gun when I was a kid.  He almost shot me after mistaking me for an intruder.  The gun he almost shot me with was turned in as part of the gun buyback after the Port Aurthur massacre.  Things could have turned out differently that night and I wouldn’t be writing this comment and my father would have been burdened with a lifetime of guilt.  I’m a father now myself.  I never want a gun in my house as I know the risks of it harming someone I love is so much greater than the likelihood I will need it for protection.  I know that people won’t want to hear it but Australia is a safer place for the gun buyback.

Yes, people do own guns here but you need a genuine reason (eg. farmers that need to control feral animals).  There are however restrictions on the types of guns people can own (you can’t own pistols or automatic/semi-automatic guns).

I live in a city and no one I know owns a gun (at least that I am aware of).

Jim's bit called "Taking An MD Sufferer To See A Prostitute" is a must. It's sweet, heartbreaking, and hilarious.

"The point of the 2nd amendment was to be able to fight a tyrannical government."  And here we are, watching the US having exactly that, and the 2nd amendment crowd not doing shit.

Fun Fact: Since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 and the subsequent gun control laws and buy back scheme, there are actually more firearms in Australia than before. The difference is we don't allow just anybody to have one. To get a shooters license and firearm you have to first prove you have a legitimate need (self protection is not a legitimate need). You must pass a background check and undergo safety training. Then there are rules about transport and storage. End result, nobody ever wonders if any random they see walking around has a gun and our children aren't worried about being shot at school.

I'm Dutch and had a break-in once when I was at home. I was ironing clothes with my window open and suddenly a young man tries to climb in. I pushed him out the window and yelled at him 😂

Currently living in Britain.
From the figures that I have seen the AVERAGE American is 192 times more likely to be killed due to firearms by another person than the AVERAGE Brit.
Also, according to The Washington Post, there have been 428 School Shootings in the US in the 25 years or so since the Columbine Shootings in 1999. In Britain there has been one. Yes, just ONE. And that was just ONE in the last 100 YEARS! Dunblane in 1996. And what did the Brits do afterwards They tightened up their Gun Control Laws even more!!!
America, I just despair for you! 😥

What I see as the key difference between the US and most other countries is that people are buying guns with the idea of shooting other people. They see it as defending their family and the property, but in reality they have already crossed the mental rubicon that they are prepared to shoot a person. Then it just takes that short moment when they feel the justification has been met, often in a panic, and someone is killed.

Answering your question- after the port Arthur massacre (why we got gun control) semi automatic and automatic weapons were made illegal (except special circumstances) large magazines and flick knives became illegal. you need a valid reason to have a license (personal protection is not a reason but being a farmer or sports shooter is valid) and need to register your firearm. There are more firearms in Australia now after the regulations came in but they are controlled and the people owning them are trained and vetted….

As an Australian, I look at the US and think, thank God I’m Australian. What’s happening in the US doesn’t happen here, and is less likely to and the reason is our political system. I love our political system. I love that we have multiple parties (more than 2). I love that we have compulsory voting. And I especially love that we have preferential voting instead of first-past-the-post.

Compulsory voting means everyone has a say, and politicians are forced to focus on the centre, the majority of everyday voters, rather than just energising the extremes. It helps keep our politics civil. Preferential voting means our second, third, and even fourth choices count, which makes the system more representative.

Years ago we brought in gun control, it was very unpopular at the time, and our conservative right government that brought it in, even wore a bullet proof vest when addressing the angry crowd. But fast forward, even those angry people now say it was a great decision, it’s very hard (near impossible) to find a person who disagrees with this decision. If you’re an Australian, you can get a gun, but you need to have a reason, (Primary Producer, Hunting, Gun club, Occupational use, Collector). It also has to be stored in a locked compartment that only the licensed person knows where the key is.

I think the US needs to take a step back, review its constitution, and consider some reforms, even if that means adopting elements of Australia’s, or other countries that do democracy better. Australia’s far from perfect, but it is stable, inclusive, and (thankfully) boring.

1:04 To them I say: Sure! If you're paying for it.

In Shakespeare, the jester is often the deliverer of truth. It was passed off as “Well they’re just a fool”. This is a genre of comedy that I love. It makes you think whilst you laugh. Great reaction to both part of this 👏

The ultimate irony in Americans fighting back against a tyrannical government is that the ones with guns are more likely to do it against non-tyrannical governments (Jan 6 says hello) and when there actually IS a tyrannical government like when under Forrest Trump, the Americans with guns support it and the ones who do not, probably do not own guns to fight back anyway!

He's not joking about muskets. Even for skilled musketeer it takes 15-20 seconds just to reload a musket. If I remember correctly highest number of aimed shots in minute is 3 and that still hasn't been beaten, in over 150 years.

"Yes you can... It's called an Amendment"... peak line right there

I’m an Australian gun owner. But only small calibre. I’ve been to the US and for fun we went to an indoor rifle range. And I have to admit that after firing a military automatic it definitely gives a feeling of empowerment and psychological strength. (Must be something with the caveman in us). Walked away thinking thank God we can’t have these weapons back home.

Heidi, to learn about Australian firearm reform, watch "John Oliver Gun Control".  Make sure you watch parts 1 & 2.

As an Aussie I find our gun licenses and controls and expectations of behaviour very similar to getting a light plane license and all the self-control and social responsibility in flying a plane. And understand the environment and social expectations of using them.

Anyone who passes the license test and training can fly a Cessna, but they can't fly it through a school, park, shopping centre, main street, leave it out unattended in their front yard etc etc. Guns are the same.

Aussie civilians don't own assault rifles like we don't fly fully armed F111 fighter jets

lol Jim Jeffries is gold. His bits on God and religion are funny as hell.

As an Aussie, pre 1996 our gun laws were pretty much identical to the US. There was no regulation or control (it varied from  state to state), but you could walk into a gun store & just buy what you wanted.

Post 1996, they banned high powered guns, automatic & semi-automatic rifles (you can still buy semi-automatic hand guns), you can't own a shotgun that can hold more than 2 rounds, you can't buy guns with high capacity magazines, your gun must be registered, the owner must have a gun licence, you must be a member of a gun range, and go there at least 4 times a year to be given up-to-date safety information etc... mandatory background checks, and finally, you must give a genuine reason for wanting to own a gun (self-defence isn't considered a valid reason)
