In this episode of The Econoclasts, Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Munchau dissect the systemic breakdown of German centrist politics, reveal the uncomfortable truth about Europe’s total lack of defence sovereignty under US hegemony, and debunk the conventional political narrative by exposing how the centre-Left bears primary responsibility for the continent’s long-term deindustrialisation and geopolitical decline.

Without cheap abundant energy, failure follows.

So called "center" have lost their mind, it was painfully obvious during COVID and same right now. Now people are running left and right and you can't blame them.

Getting rid of nuclear power in Germany was the biggest mistake. They should have double down on Nuclear base load. Additionally forcing full electric on vehicles is insane especially since Europe isn't processing raw materials needed for manufacturing batteries.
Also start sending those refugees back.

Great story told by Yanis but he left out the most important SD: Obama. Obama had immense power in early 2009 but he did what Blair did: he asked the bankers what they needed so that he could get his medical reform. He put the bankers back in the driver's seat.

Thank you for such a succinct explanation of the state of the left. I’m in Australia. The Labor government is such a disaster I’ve been left flabbergasted. Now I understand why.

Germany spent the last 20 years exporting high value goods to China, using cheap energy from
Russia. Now China makes its own high value products and Russian energy is gone.

Using left-right model to explain politics is like using Roman numerals to do mathematics.

16 years of Helmet Coal + 16 years Angelo Murksel.... 32 years wasted by CDU...

It's ironic VW aren't allowed to make cars that might harm the planet or people but can make weapons designed to do damage to the planet and people.

9:20 First Rule of Holes: When you are in one, stop digging.
In this case, rational immigration and energy policies would change it all, but the centrist parties would rather die than do the right thing.

Fascinating discussion today, thank you

Self proclaimed far leftist varoufakis taking sponsorship from T212 is the most hilarious thing on internet today.

All insightful and pertinent observations from both discussants. Regarding the bombing of a European capital in order to change borders and where it started - absolutely right, Yanis. NATO Bombing Belgrade without the UN vote, in order to create Kosovo and rob part of a sovereign country to make its breakaway province a separatist state, is exactly where Europe opened the Pandora’s box. Now watch it unfolding in Ukraine, and elsewhere. As a freshman at the university in Belgrade, I watched Germany’s politicians playing prominent role in the breakup of Yugoslavia. We here know what they did. It’s universal justice that such ‘political elites’ now see the bitter fruits of own deeds back at home.

The US first blew up the Nord stream pipeline and started exporting LNG to the EU to replace that, then blew up the middle east and left the EU helpless on energy supplies. Now what?
