I agree with Steph, whenever I talk to upper-middle-class people they're always complaining about how inconvenient going on holiday abroad is because since leaving the EU they have to queue for 15-20 mins when they get off the plane. I know most of us don't go on holiday abroad enough to really notice this, but I do feel that issue of queuing at the airport could convince a lot of more affluent people that we need to rejoin the EU. Issues of sovereignty and immigration almost feel irrelevent in comparison, the debate should be fought primarily on median airport queue times for those who frequently go on international holidays.

Rebalancing the UK economy doesn't require higher taxes on workers—it requires a total tax code "tidy up." By replacing interest payments on central bank reserves with a 0% tiered rate, aligning capital gains with income tax, and capping high-earner pension relief at a flat 28%, the Treasury could easily raise over £30bn annually. That fully funds raising the Personal Allowance, shifting the 40% band to £58k, scrapping the 60% tax trap, and reversing the Employer NICs hike without growing the deficit.

We need to stop analysing everything in terms of the "cost" and whether we can "afford" it. That is how household finances work, not how governments with fiat currencies work. The government could choose to create an efficient public transport network in every town which would improve the productivity of the UK but if we say we cannot "afford" to do this, then we lose out on that future economic growth because of a self-impose, artificial fiscal rule. It makes no sense. Any investment that has a CBR significantly above 1 and which we have the resources to do, should be done.

The most important impact on all of us is not the deficit, ageing society or even Trumps disastrous adventures. It is AI! Burnham gave a talented speech, but how will society adapt when graduate unemployed skyrockets?

We don't need a big bang solution. If what is first introduced is equivalent of the Scottish model, and limited to the over 65s, that would be a fantastic start and a great achievement. The savings in bed blocking in the NHS would be fantastic.
Once that is in place and working we can then work out where and when the carer service can and/or could/should be expanded.
Trying for perfection will cause nothing to be done.

Bed and Board can be deducted from Pensions. It is unlikely that it will pay for it all but a contribution that would take the edge off it. It will work until the unions start using the elderly and infirm as a bargaining chip to obtain higher wages and improvements to working conditions rather than living conditions for the elderly and infirm.

Burnham said a lot about spending money, money we haven’t got, so that’s tax rises for ordinary people. We’ve got a cost of living crisis, we’re entering a debt crisis, an energy crisis and national security is at risk. There’s not much point talking about 2030 and beyond if the economy and the country is already holed below the water line!

Why does Mr Peston Love Andy so much , please try and be more impartial . I am affraid living in the North East he is offering us nothing , why suggest we go back to Europe when we are out performing them in growth , they are moving to the right in big numbers. He has no answers for Growth now and he has no movement on big Tax,.
He should man up and challenge the country to agree to his vision against the other parties and see if the people have the appetite for his vision. We need to pay our bills and stop borrowing lets have some honesty.

What he did do was tell a lot of lies.
Reforming the triple lock to pay for social care, it won't pay a fraction of it, and he said it will save £15B over the next 10 years; I wild guess at best, it could save 0 to £20B, but according to some economists, probably £4B over 10 years, which equals £400M/yr, while the social care budget is £42B per year.
Peston seems to think that getting rid of the triple lock will somehow trickle down to the young, which is another guess.
