Will scrapping the triple lock be electorally perilous for Burnham, or can his vision of a national care service convince the public and his party that it’s time for pension reform? Did being Mayor of Greater Manchester make him a better orator? And what is Rory’s explanation for his viral Newsnight stare?

Rory, don't let the Meme make you self consciousness. We love your expressive self ❤

I’m 48 and to be honest this is the best, most moving and powerful speech by any politician I’ve heard in a long time.
I like his honesty, his ease at which he communicates. You feel he’d answer any question you ask. I really like him and his ideas.

My Dad used to say, having fought at El Alamein that :
"FEAR IS CONTAGIOUS. CONFIDENCE CAN BE CATCHING."

The speech focused on the issues we really want addressed. It was a roadmap for the country and the direction is where we actually want to go. Bravo Andy - I know I’ll remember where I was when I saw the speech!

As a pensioner (living now in Germany) i have no problem with losing tripple lock. Yes i have other pensions but worked in care sector for 25 years. Pensions only went up 5x in line with earnings since tripple lock instigated. If losing a few % once every 3 years means social care starts to get addressed its a price well worth paying. And FINALLY we have a labour leader who tslks honestly about brexit

He delivered it confidently because he believes it

I also loved the way he's inviting parties to work together.Aren't we sick of the bickering in politics?

Confidence comes from being genuine

I think it’s spot on and Social Care has been crying out for reform and a double lock I would be happy with when I reach my pension in 3 yrs

Don’t underestimate the importance for those listening of the refusal to opposition bash. Joyous. Bashing is often a way of hiding that the speaker has NOTHING useful or sensible to say. Long overdue so let’s hope other senior figures follow Burnham’s lead. 🌹

Some people will hate his policies, some will love it, but it was at least refreshing for a change to see a politician charge head first towards the danger.

Still feeling bouyant from this great speech. At points as he revved up I felt he was really speaking from his heartfelt belief in turning the country around. So bloody rare from a politician. Can't believe I feel what I can only think is pride...

He didn't just sound full of plans and confidence, he sounded like he understood the issues and what to do about them. His passion to improve people's lives was also refreshing - just like good politics used to be.

A man for our times, is how I felt. Also glad he lost the Labour leadership twice before and got a chance to mature his position outside of Parliament.
He has a fair wind now to deliver on all these things which both left and right can identify as the issues even if they disagree on the solutions.

You can't fake authenticity - Andy Burnham has it in bucketloads.

The speech was honest, that’s why it hit home. old school jaded politicians and journalists can’t work it out because they only ever think of themselves first.

@johnstringer5359 1 day ago

We have waited a very long time for a politician of substance from either the left or the right. Now we have one.

It was lovely to hear a speech that didn’t avoid the hard realities but gave a direction to moved towards that people can get behind. Just hoping the media will allow time to debate and see further details before pull it all down for clicks! Who else is providing a plan for the country, most just want to tear it all down and sh”t talk the country ❤

It is a shame his Dad was not aware that his son became PM of the UK. Even so, I am sure he is looking out for him. RIP Mr Burnham. It is not easy for Andy Burnham to grieve at this time having the job that he has.

He sure has a sincerity about him and coupled with his passion for his beliefs. He deserves the chance to further hone his vision and deliver that message to the people to build support. Rejoin the EU and 25%++ of all this can be paid for. This speech had strong JFK delivery style to it. Kudos to the PM!!
