I have a feeling it's no coincidence that the mothers chose to have these conversations in the car—in a situation where they're the drivers and are in control, in a space where there's no escape, while they say terrible things to minors.
There’s a special, very sad kind of irony in seeing a black person force their religion on their children in the same way their ancestors literally had that same religion beaten into them.
I’ve heard Christians disparage the Scientology cult for literally ripping families apart by telling their cult members to disown family members that left, and then those same Christians do the same thing to their deconstructing children and say “oh but that’s love!!!” 🙄
I can remember getting the crap beat out of me by my dad 35 years ago because "you told your mom that you don't believe in god." For anyone even thinking of considering sympathy for my mother, she told him specifically for that purpose.
So many religious people see families break apart when one of them leaves christianity, and they think 'WE need to enforce religion to keep families together", not realizing that the real issue is that religion is a shaky foundation for familial bonds, that if your bond with your children comes before your religion then your family will be stronger, if your religion comes before your bond with your children then your family will be weaker.
I’m 31 and just had this realization in full this year…even though I’ve been deconstructing since I was 17. I was at a bachelorette party, the bride was a Christian, and my sister was her maid of honor, and also a Christian, and every single other bridesmaid was a Christian. They literally cut me out. They talked to each other the entire weekend, non stop, and would maybe acknowledge me if I tried to add to the conversation, but that was it. They’d literally turn their bodies away from me and make a circle, and I’d be on the outside. They didn’t know me, a hadn’t done anything wrong, but because I wasn’t religious, they weren’t going to accept me. And I realized then that that’s how it’s always going to be, even though I’m still a good person, just as good as any Christian, they’re going to treat me as less because I don’t stand in a building every Sunday and pretend I’m perfect.
As an African American, I truly despise the faction of other African Americans who place christianity, the religion that was forced onto us, above being decent people. Above loving our kids. Above being Black. I am not saying we as black people should not be christian. If you wanna be christian, good for you, go ahead. But I have seen so many christian black people not only because balls deep in it to the point that they persecute other black people, but also uphold white supremacy and demonize or Native African religions and cultural practices. Such as christian black people demonizing traditional African dances or trying to christianize Egyptian paganism. It truly breaks my heart to see my fellow African Americans be SOOOOO trapped in the indoctrination, that they turn on us. Such as the mom in the first video. I hope that kid is okay
