My house, my rules is for like "no smoking inside" not treating your child's marriage as illegitimate and immoral

Evangelical parents have an uncanny knack to sincerely say they love you, and it hits like a threat or insult.

I have a chronic illness and every time I talk about my health my mother brings the conversation back to religion. She very much believes that I am sick because of demons.

One year when I was a child I got a literal bag of pears from my grandma for Christmas.  She said that she remembered I said I really liked pears.  Even then at like 6 or 7 years old I knew my recently widowed grandma was hard up for money.  I said thank you very much grandma I really do love pears.  Even then I could understand she wanted to get me a better gift but did the best she could at the time.  Do people like this just never lose the entitlement stage when very young?  I genuinely don't understand.

I found when my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, all his Christian family and mine flooding in desperately trying to bring him back to his faith. Now his passed without converting they are all reverting to 'onced saved possibly always saved'. I just shrug.

I got to burn the 20th letter sent to me by my dad that is basically just "Please get a girlfriend and com back to Jesus and me! Noooo! You can't be gay! Please come back!"

I was formerly a very conservative Christian. I experienced a lot of pressure to raise a good Christian kid. My child is an adult now. I'm thankful that I realized long ago that I needed to love and embrace my child for who they are, not who I thought they were supposed to be.

One of friends was disowned by her parents at age 18 because she told them she wasn't a Christian. They cut her off from every type of support including health insurance.  She is currently 40, doing great, a happy mom and successful  in her carreer. No thanks to her parents. That was brutal.

Muslim parents act in the exact same way, unfortunately. I grew up in a Muslim family and was forced to keep my boyfriend a secret from my parents for 10 long years out of fear. My dad caught me texting him one time and threatened to pull me out of college (we met freshman year and started dating sophomore year). I pretty much lived a double life, walking on eggshells at home, pretending to be someone I was not, until I was able to move out to attend graduate school on the literal other side of the country so I could live my own life the way I wanted to. For the first time, my boyfriend and I were able to spend time together without looking over our shoulders for my parents or people who knew me and would report to my parents. He visited me often, and I visited him a few times as well; we did the long-distance thing for a couple of years. He proposed to me July 2021 and we moved in together. At that point, I thought it was time my parents knew the truth. They were growing more insistent that I move home because Muslim women who aren't married are not supposed to live alone. So, I dropped the bombshell on them: a) I had a boyfriend, b) I accepted his proposal, c) I was living with him, and d) no, I wasn't going to move back home. As you can expect, they were absolutely furious. They did not come to my wedding, and we only speak (mostly via text message) on birthdays. I used to be really close with my dad, and it has taken me a long time to come to terms with the fact that he values his religion more than me. I do have my own chosen family, including my in-laws - who paid for everything at the wedding and celebrated with us - as well as friends. Of course, there are hard days when I miss my parents terribly, but this video has helped me realize that just like they want a specific version of me to exist, I also want a specific version of them to exist. There is no middle ground to be gained when both sides believe they are right and the other wrong. What is the point of living a charade and being miserable while doing it? All I can do is leave the door open and hope that they walk through it one day. Thanks for making this video, it has helped me see some things differently.

These poor sheltered children are going to be so unprepared when they enter the real world, and realize they’re not the hero in a God’s Not Dead movie.

I'm not even deconstructing, and my estranged evangelical parent is harassing me.

I'm an atheist, one of my good friends is Lutheran; outside of religion we share the same values. It's not hard to truly love someone without making it conditional on faith or conforming to your exact beliefs.

I am a product of parents like that last couple. No Halloween. No Santa. No scary movies. No secular music. No sexual themes, even make out scenes in movies were fast forwarded through. I was sexually active WAY too early in life. I snuck around because I was told I couldn’t have any romantic relationships (and in my head, that meant NEVER having a romantic relationship because they didn’t teach me anything about them. I would just “know” when it was the right guy.) I was also told I, “couldn’t be depressed,” because depression wasn’t real. Meanwhile, my mom was taking antidepressants. I was an anxious, depressed, suicidal, undiagnosed autistic girl just grinning and baring it for so long, that it just became my full identity- that’s what Christianity was to me. Intense suffering. Pain. Lies. And all in silence and solitude. I was alone.
I’m in my 30s now, deconstructing while divorcing someone just as manipulative and narcissistic, someone who made me feel the exact same way I felt when I was growing up. I’m learning to find myself and it is pure agony. I wish my parents could open up and just listen to my experiences without this goal of getting me back to where I was, because they don’t understand that the person they want to come back was a person who wanted stop living.
I thank you for talking about these things and making a safe space for us traumatized individuals who have escaped the fundamental clutches. I don’t feel alone anymore.

For Christmas this year I didn't go to my extended family celebration for the first time ever, I'm 26. I decided not to go because my uncle (the host) shared stuff on Facebook after CK ended that was encouraging retributive violence and I'm a transgender person so one of the groups that experienced the most harm because of him. I didn't tell anyone but my parents why I wasn't going, but I'm still so proud that I didn't go. I spent Christmas evening with my best mate, their spouse and another mate of there's. We drank, ate pizza, smoked and talked shit and it was exactly what I needed. Found/chosen family is so so important and I'm so happy I have mine!

When I left Christianity, I also left my evangelical family. My mother had already made it clear that a relationship with her was contingent on me continuing to stay in the little box I’d always been in. She didn’t want to know my thoughts and feelings, she wanted compliance. There was no big conversation with anyone but her, I just stopped being part of family things. They wouldn’t have disowned me outright, but I knew how I’d be treated. Not worth it, no thanks, and bye. 👋
