There have been many close calls in the world of Aviation Safety. But few are as ridiculous and surprising as the curious case of British Air Tours Flight 101. An enormous widebody passenger plane carrying over 400 people is left teetering on the edge of hill, metres from absolute disaster.
The investigation that followed would expose shortcomings in the process by which the United Kingdom certified certain aircraft parameters and the tight margins that can exist within the country’s relationship with its regional airports operating of large airplanes on short runways.
Those same delicate margins meant to ensure safe operations can easily in the right circumstances become eroded with enormous consequences. How easy is it for things to slip away. Some airports can barely offer enough room, and all it takes is just one bad day.

Why is that so striking?
Because just two weeks earlier, Lincoln City had been the visiting team at Valley Parade for the final match of the season, the match during which the Bradford City stadium fire broke out, killing 56 people and injuring hundreds more.
So the same club that had been present at one of the worst disasters in British football history found itself involved in an aviation accident only days later, a handful of miles apart. No one was killed in the runway overrun, but the coincidence is undeniably unsettling.

Luton has an even bigger drop off at both ends of the runway, due to the Chiltern Hills.
I remember when Caledonian used to operate the TriStar to Paphos from Luton and that take off would scrape right off the end of the runway and would leave you breathless seeing that depart.
