A Paris appeals court has just ruled that Airbus and Air France are criminally responsible for the 2009 crash of Flight 447, which killed all 228 people on board. A friend of mine died on this flight. When someone you know puts there faith in the hands of experienced pilots and dies for no good reason it hits hard. RIP Juliana de Aquino. Lion King Germany will never forget you.

I find it criminal that the criminal corporate manslaughter cap is 200k for THE ENTIRE INCIDENT. Even if it was per person, it is an incredibly low value for a human life, and no more than a rounding error for most corporations finances. Basically says that it’s cheaper to let some people die from your company actions than spend more money on safety.

As to the rumor of customer service possibly giving passengers grief for leaving their bags during an evacuation, I'd like a criminal investigation into that. Because as a passenger in a potential future evacuation, they are directly risking my life.

Regarding the luggage issue. From what I saw, the problem was with not the crew. But one obedient passenger, who followed instructions and didn’t take her hand luggage with her, went to the airport staff shortly after the incident and asked for her luggage back because there was important medication in it. The staff unhelpfully told her she should have taken her luggage with her instead of leaving it in the plane. Which of course is just what she was not supposed to do. Now this is what I saw on social media so it might not be accurate. But I don’t have access to any more reliable source… so anyway, here it is for what it’s worth.

Years back the field I worked at had an incident where some kids decided to jump the fences and explore the airport in the middle of the night. What the kids didnt know was that they picked the night that the city SWAT team was training on one side of the airport (all lights off). So they were exploring right up until they found themselves surrounded by black suits with NVG's. Nobody ever told them it was a once a quarter exercise. Guessing they told all their friends to stay away from the airport!

That coffee shop training anecdote shows so clearly how NO kind of education or training anywhere should be done. It is exactly the pattern that produces functional illiterates in schools: harassing pupils for not knowing things instead of teaching them. Some rather get the hang of faking it than actually learning to read.

It hadn't occurred to me that the Airlines would send the bill to the disruptive passenger. That, coupled with a global travel ban, is probably better than a prison sentence actually.

People don't realize that at cabin altitude pressure, around 8,000 ft, alcohol hits harder.

This is the first tiime after watching many videos and reading up on the AF447 crash that made me understand why the pilots reacted as they did. I am glad Air France and Airbus are being held responsible, as they should be.
However I think the Captain knowing there was severe weather ahead should have diverted as other flights did or at least stayed in the cockpit to deal with the upcoming weather and sent Bonin instead on the break. Also, and I am not sure if this is true, before the flight the Captain had said he only got 1 hour of sleep that night before. If this is the case some part of me holds him responsible as well for the crash.

I cannot imagine the terror and suffering of all those on board and the families that were left behind. 💔

I heard the story about the woman being criticised by Customer Services too. Apparently it was a woman with a young baby, she left the baby products (I assume nappies, bottle etc) on board and then asked the airline staff for help in getting replacement products. It seemed like a massive staff training problem.

I've always thought that directors of companies need to be held responsible in corporate manslaughter cases.Directors are only to happy to take the credit (and the huge bonuses!) when things go well, but when things go wrong they claim "It's not me guv" and walk away (probably still with huge bonuses!)

A granny hitting a concrete runway was a very persuasive line to use about the emergency evacuation procedures. I think many people just don’t understand the gravity of the situation. Another great chat, cheers fellas.

Interesting video. As a retired airline pilot having flown Airbus 330, 320 and Boeing 737 aircraft this accident was of interest to me. The main point you have raised is the complete independence of the sidesticks. We were trained (in the early 1990s) that when taking over manually you pressed the sidestick button to get the 'priority left' call out and instrument indication. That would remove the F/O from the control loop.

The way to deal with this in the cruise is to set a known EPR on the engine gauges. This gets around the icing unreliable readings to the ADC (Air Data Computer). You then ignore overspeed or stall warnings until the icing is cleared.

This is what happens when people are flying planes who don’t truly understand stick and rudder flying. Over reliance on automation and computers got everyone killed.

Funny story. I worked in ATC, in the tower of a major airport. Some private or regional small plane disembarked their passengers on the south field. Our major terminal was on the north field, with the main runway in between. A large international, North American airport. One passenger saw the terminal, grabbed his bag and went off to take a shortcut, across the runway. Obviously he was given a free “taxi” ride into the terminal, via our ops vehicle, but just saying, more than one way to get on a runway.

There's also the paradox of very high altitude icing. Ice at that altitude normally doesn't stick because it's too cold. But ironically anti-icing systems can heat it just enough to make it "sticky" without melting it, which is apparently what happened in the pitot tubes on A447. They quickly unfroze as the plane descended but by then the crew had lost confidence in what the instruments were telling them.
