Celtic and Rangers are often blamed for creating Scotland’s Catholic-Protestant divide. But the timeline tells a very different story.

In 1829, more than 30,000 people signed a Glasgow petition opposing Catholic emancipation.

Rangers wouldn’t exist for another 43 years.

Celtic wouldn’t exist for another 58.

So where did the divide actually come from?

This video goes back through the Scottish Reformation, Irish migration, Orangeism and industrial Glasgow to look at the forces that already existed long before Celtic and Rangers became Scotland’s dominant football rivalry.

The clubs didn’t create those identities from nothing.

They inherited them.

And football eventually gave them one of the biggest stages they would ever have.

If you watched my previous video on the Old Firm, this is the part of the story that starts much earlier.
