What if a mayor and his cronies are corrupt? I sse this all the time from the states and the people are going to public meetings to try to hold them to account and the things they have to pay taxes for you cannot imagine,permits to buy for everything!!

When Thatcher sold off the utilities the country retained a golden share to hold the private companies to account. Labour gave those golden shares away

They complain about 3.5% inflation today, I can remember during the debacle of the 70's labour governments with about 22% inflation when  Callaghan was shown the door, and we had endured examinations by the I.M.F., devaluation, the Winter of Discontent, beer and sandwiches in the Cabinet Room with the unions. The whole spectacle of a left-wing Labour Government was an absolute joke and an unmitigated disaster. Then Thatcher comes on stage, and it takes her 3 or 4 years for the direction to change; such was the hole we had got ourselves in. Not to mention, in the meantime she had fought a war. Then after Major, in comes Blair with a light-touch socialist approach, which produced balanced budgets. Now Burnham wants to rip all that up and for the government to go back to running railways, water companies, and possibly many other things in this socialist utopia, just up the Yellow Brick Road and left at the top towards Nowhere.

Does the country really want to be taken down this path.All the young folk eligible to vote will have no clue about the awful 70's the Unions and the dreadful state of the economy.This very naive acting prime minister wants to take us all back there.

I don't care who the PM is as long as there's: no boats, zero immigration for 5 years, freedom of speech (eg. reverse islamization, increased cultural assimilation), rejoining EU etc.

Mr Neil is right. It is fair to say that Labour and Mr Burham are sleepwalking towards disaster, especially fiscal disaster.  Whilst the Labour faithful are praising the new messiah (or is it a false prophet?) the realists and pragmatists in the UK and beyond are bracing themselves for the inevitable crash which, under Labour, is sure to come.   Those of us who have watched Labour over the years know there is a huge difference between promises and delivery.  Labour will fail. They always do.

Listen to that monologue -  all we need is dads army Fraser ‘we’re doomed, doomed I say’ no attempt to see the need for change no solutions offered just ‘we’re doomed’ it was a lot worst after the Second World War yet we got the NHS and massive house building.
