Peter mentions the state being very poor at childcare. In my own family a distant adopted relative was removed at 14. She had perfect school attendance and was a virgin. Within 6 months of state care she had Zero school attendance , a criminal record for assault and arson and a STD. 6 months FFS !. She subsequently died at 31 after being in full state care. My Family was shut out from helping until it became too late.

Just leave things to sort themselves out and everything will turn out just fine.

How could we have been so naive?

The problem that no one is addressing (apart from Peter Hitchens) is the changing nature of families.  Once we had extended families who carried out at least some of the care of older or less able family members.  Now everyone goes to work and has to move miles away there is no one to do this.  Things that you can do very easily as a family member, like personal care, becomes much much more complicated (and expensive) when someone else is providing it.  The idea of an NHS-like social care service is laughable, as anyone who works in social care knows.  Who is going to pay for it?  Who is going to work in it?  Which poor person is going to be the one who gets put to bed at 5pm because that is when the 'social-care NHS' says that is bed time?

My layabout friend takes home 1800 a month. Equal to a 30k job. Never paid a penny in tax. Apparently suffers from chronic anxiety everytime he hears the word job. He is one of millions. Am I the fool for not joining in ? Off to work now .
