Before: wow the high notes are incredible
Now: omg her low voice 😍

I personally don’t care that they bumped the key down slightly, seeing as how the lead singer (EJAE) sang this right after recovering from bronchitis / vocal illness, and still killed this performance

I guess EJAE really knows this song because she’s the one who wrote it ahaha

Ejae got bronchitis and covid back to back therefore they had to sing 2 keys lower if i’m not mistaken. She also said the morning of the show she had no voice. Despite all that she delivered an amazing vocal performance.

You kept commenting about her "knowing the song inside and out" and I couldnt help but think "she did write it, lol" ❤

Ejae knows this song so well becouse she wrote it and it holds a special place for her due to her own kpop ideal struggles.

She had bronchitis and COVID back to back, and after all the press events, her appearance on Jimmy Fallon was her first time singing live and to perform. In short, fatigue and stress caught up with her.

She shared that she lost her voice during the morning rehearsal—just like in the movie—when her voice cracked on “like I’m born to be.” A panic attack began to set in, so she took five minutes to rest and recenter herself. She recalled that her manager and fiancé—and I’m pretty sure Rei and Audrey, too—were all there to support her, encouraging her not to fixate on the high note but to reconnect with why she wrote the song and how it had helped her. If the song could now reach a global platform, they reminded her, that gave it another layer of meaning—how amazing that it could speak to everyone and offer a sense of hope. Recentered, she focused on the lyrics; that’s why the live version wasn’t in the movie’s exact key. They performed it in a lower key that carried the deeper emotions of a live performance.

I paraphrase (I think it's on point) the above information from the interview Ejae did here:

Here is another one, start around 28:32 at this link below

They went down a key for the performance. Ejae was getting over bronchitis, and even had a panic attack that day.

Oh oh, please do EJAE's first ever single "In Another World". The first time she releases a song for herself, and not for other singers :) She deserves all the love.

This is harder to execute than the original version because of the low notes and the high notes are still incredibly high

1:35 The Taylor clip 😂😂😂😂

Ejae's impressive. She not only wrote the songs for the movie, she also wasn't supposed to be the singer for Rumi but got cast some time in writing. Rumi was supposed to have an impossible range, which Ejae wrote in and discovered her own range (3-4 octaves!!!!) from hitting an A5 in Golden and at the end of How It's Done, she adlibs a D6!!!! She's an alto btw. They lowered it two keys because she had bronchitis. I also think it's really cute that Rei is so close to Ejae just like Zoey and Rumi in the movie and that Audrey is literally Mira with the attitude, I think the cast fits perfectly.

EJAE spent ten years training in a K-pop school and was then rejected by them. Talk about a Comeback!

They are super bad ass. Ejae was the songwriter and producer for this and didn’t plan to sing.

Three “birds” with one “stone”:
1. Live performance on The Tonight Show for those who claim the song “Golden” was sung by AI.
2. Lower one key for doubters who claim they are just lip-syncing (from D3-A5 to C3-G5).
3. Lower one key because EJAE was recovering from bronchitis (then COVID then a nasty cold).

All the girls has solo music out, you should check them all out.

6:45 she lowered her voice cause she had bronchitis and her doctor said she couldn’t sin g too night to much anymore 😢😢😢

A few points worth mentioning:

Audrey Nuna has a Killing Verse video of her solo work that’s worth checking out. (Her discography is also worth listening and watching.)

EJAE was one of the songwriters for Golden, so she knows how difficult the song is to sing and navigate, even in the slightly lower key. There are a few of her songwriting demo tracks posted online. (This performance was EJAE’s debut.)

You may want to check out Rei Ami’s discography as well.

Thanks for your great analysis and insight.

Ejae wrote this song, she wrote alot of the songs for k pop demon hunters. She said in a interview she came up with the melody for golden on the way to the dentist.

Ejae story is amazing, she trained for 10 yrs to debut but was rejected because she was to old, then she became a song writer for some k pop singers.
