Yes! One of the most underrated movies and one of my all time favorites! The Book of Michael Crichton (the same author who wrote "Jurassic Park" by the way, or "Dino-Park in the original) "Eaters of the dead" on which this movie is based, is also very interesting and good!

The 13th Warrior is the true hidden gem

The northman leader died watching his enemies retreat in defeat sitting upon a battle throne.

The actor who plays the lead Norseman is terrific in this. I love when he sits on his throne of spears.

This film deserved so much more. It's forever a classic regardless.

The 13th Warrior was shot in 1997, before Antonio Banderas starred The Mask of Zorro, but it took two years of post-production because director John McTiernan and producer Michael Crichton, writer of the novel Eaters of the Dead (1976) in which the movie is based of, entered in conflict about how the movie would must be. It affected roughly to the final cut, including the replacement of composer Graeme Revell by Jerry Goldsmith, who created a remarkable soundtrack and his last great work before passing away in 2004.
it was a relative box office bomb, but over the years it gained enough fame to become a cult movie praised by the dark tone of the adventure, the epic of its scenes and the soundtrack. And the powerful performance of Antonio Banderas, of course.

The Book is : Eaters of the Dead, by Michael Crichton.

In the story wise, the 13th Warrior who wrote everything in the end as the king's dying wish 😁

Fun bit of trivia: Ibn Fadlan was a real person who was sent Northeast out of Baghdad as an emissary of the Caliph & to report back about the countries he visited. Somewhere in what is now Kazakhstan (or thereabouts), he encountered Vikings or Northmen & included some notes on them & their less-than-fully-developed habits of personal hygiene, but he did not travel to Scandinavia with them. Michael Crichton combined these notes with a little Beowulf to come up with "Eaters of the Dead".

the viking warrior with red hair (Weath) was Marcus, the first vampire in "Underworld", he was also a vampire in "Blade 2", he was also Bor, Thor's grandfather, and he was also trying to kill Maximus in "Gladiator"

The Bulgars were Turkic semi-nomadic warrior tribes that flourished in the Pontic–Caspian steppe and the Volga region between the 5th and 7th centuries. Ahmad Iben Fadlan crossed actual Iran and Uzbekistan to reach Volga river. His journey lasted 11 months.

love this movie, so underrated

The scene where the Vikings make fun of Ahmed’s horse is really cool because it shows the huge cultural clash between the civilizations. The most interesting thing is that the Norse didn’t “like” fighting on horseback; they generally used cavalry to travel quickly, not to fight. During campaigns, the horses were almost entirely stolen. Cavalry was expensive to maintain; you had to be quite wealthy to own horses during that period (and nowadays too, hahaha!). And Arabian horses are among the best and oldest in the world—true machines capable of covering nearly 200 km a day. If the Norse had known that, they certainly would have wanted one of these “little dogs.” Western Europeans generally used cavalry as shock troops, advancing along the enemy’s flanks and decimating their lines. Eastern civilizations viewed cavalry differently in war; they were generally lighter and faster. They used a concept called Furusiyya, which was a code of military conduct in which knights employed various skills on horseback (riding, fencing, archery). In battle, they would kill you before they even got close to you (mounted archers).

The character Antonio Banderas portrays - Ahmed ibn Fahdlan - was a real person from history. His full name was Ahmad ibn Fahdlan ibn al-Abbas al-Bagdadi. The events of the film are a fictionalized account of his adventures.

Herger is just living his best life the whole film

This a re-telling of Beowulf the oldest existing poem in English.  Bullwyf is an older spelling of Beowulf.  Grendel is a monster in the original story and so is his mother.    Michael Crichton wrote the book to give a non-supernatural background for the ancient poem.  Enjoyed your reaction.

6:38, I think the one your grandmothers adored was Omar Sharif. Look up "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doctor Zhivago"😅

one of antonio banderas's best movies & criminally underrated !

While not history this movie was very historical addressing a time forgotten by East and West.

Very underrated movie
