Argentinian fan here... I've flown this route a couple of times, always in bad weather, this video made my skin crawl... Civil aviation in the 90's was awful over here, it was controlled by the army and under severe de-regulation... I've asked this before, but Petter I'd love to hear you and your team's take on the LAPA 3142 accident, that one was a major turning point in how civil aviation was managed in our country.

I’m old enough to remember thinking that air travel was amazingly safe in 1997 with incredible knowledge and training and safety. To now hear ‘that wasn’t known then, that wasn’t part of training then’ etc is …. retrospectively slightly terrifying

I will be honest; my initial reaction to hearing Argentina had a wholly different report was, "Of course, they're defending their pilots." As soon as Petter started describing the results of the Argentine experiments, I realized that it made so much more sense. Unfortunately, safety regulations are often written in blood.

I am Uruguayan and I remember that crash. That morning when I heard about the accident I said to my father that it was crazy they were flying with the horrible thunderstorm we were experiencing. We had had hail, wind and torrential rain for hours. A complete tragedy.

I'm from Argentina and I remember this crash. I was a teenager. It was devastating, it was on the news 24/7 for weeks. I also remember LAPA flight 3142. It was even worse. These pilots were overwhelmed by a very complicated situation, and acted as best as they could with the training they had. LAPA pilots were just negligent. I hope you do that case someday.

Thank you and your team for making this video possible. As an Argentinian pilot, we're taught this accident early in our careers when studying CRM and human factors, and it's been widely discussed, but the ice crystal icing theory makes a lot of sense in this scenario. Very detailed analysis, and the best part is that you and your team have absolutely no personal interest in this matter, while both argentinian and uruguayan investigators (as well as a pilot turned movie producer who also delved on the subject) had personal or political interests when talking about this.
You always did a good job with your videos, but this one was absolutely superlative. Thank you once again.

hi petter. i would like to thank you for everything you do and for making these videos. my grandmother passed away recently and, inexplicably, your videos have become the only way i can motivate myself to get out of bed and go to work. your matter-of-fact way of delivering information is perfect to make the tasks i have to do seem bearable. i don't know why your videos in particular have been latched onto by my brain, but thanks for being here to get me to function when i really want to just lay in bed all day.

Hi Petter, congratulations on the great video. I'm from Argentina and this accident has a lot of background as well with how aviation was managed in this country for many years. Back until the early 2000s, civil aviation was managed by our Air Force. Our military is known for not being the most honest and reliable entity, and like you mention in this video, many regulations and/or trainings were skipped, and we were always delayed compared to other countries. This culminated in another tragic accident in our country, which was LAPA 3142, back in 1999, just two years after this one. That one finally exposed the way our Air Force poorly managed civil aviation, and led a later government to create the ANAC, a non-military organization that, up until this day, manages civil aviation. I would love for you to cover LAPA 3142 someday. It's a sad one because it was a very stupid accident, and when you dig deeper, it was caused mainly by the bureaucracy and dishonesty that surrounded civil aviation up until the end of the century in Argentina.

It makes me sad and occasionally angry about just how many obvious safety related things airlines don't use because they weren't "required". The idea of just doing something because it is the right thing to do is completely alien to corporate executives.

Argentinian here =) tho this crash is important here, the one that completly changed things and became a major case triggering movies, documentaries, legal battles and so is the LAPA one, a couple years later. It would be amazing if you could cover it, it has a loooot of corruption involved, not poor but horrific maintenance conditions, pilots with 6 years of vacation pending, awful working conditions.

Remember this disaster very well as that night around same time I was flying from Buenos Aires to Miami on an American Airlines flight which as it turned out was only ~50km away from the Austral flight... terrible turbulece and severe thunderstorms... one of the scariest flights I've had. When I got into Miami first saw this on morning news... sent a shiver down myback.

An impact at that speed is simply incomprehensible. 90s DNA tech isn't as sensitive as what we have today, but it's pretty telling that they couldn't use it to identify evidence of occupants. Terrifying physics.
