I need a 20 hour podcast about Disney parks with Kate and Jenny Nicholson 🙌

the ratio of speaking to full-length songs makes this legally a musical

your comment about how disney is obsessed with explaining the lore to everything--it really feels like disney has been super insecure about suspension of disbelief for well over a decade, so they decided to cater to people who need you to explain why an animal talks bc ANIMALS DON'T TALK IN REAL LIFE! and so they talk down to everyone in the process

this presentation makes anime convention panels look so much more down to earth and actually "for the fans"

Kate: "What am I, if not a Disney fan?"
me: "Kate is also an American Girl fan"

Pros: I get to watch a new Babbity Kate video, it's about theme park and movie stuff which I'm very interested in!
Cons: I begin my morning with BBL Timon, without any warning or premeditation

(seriously though thank you)

It's impressive how Disney will fuck up attractions like Space Mountain in Paris and then it's a big deal that they're gonna switch it back to the version everyone liked and Defunctland did a video on

GIRL YOUR HAIRCUT LOOKS SO GOOD

"Please take my love for these things, commodify it, and sell it back to me." For the longest time Disney was less than receptive to any fan requests and fans were BEGGING for them to do anything. I remember all the huge DIsney nerds online back in the early 00s (me included) who would catalogue and make archives of Disney info (mostly re: the parks and the movies) because it seemed like the company wasn't interested in doing any of that themselves. I think the super fans would have honestly been satiated with crumbs, and wouldn't want anything to spoil their appetite.

But once the company began listening, catered to the crowd... and realized that there were big fans who would shell out TOOONS of money for this kind of stuff...... things like D23 are the result, taking full advantage of that obsessive fandom and almost "claiming" it for themselves. It's one of the reasons why I'm no longer an active fan of stuff from the company. It just feels like the fun of being that kind of obsessive fan that cared got commodified to hell with everything else and there's no point anymore.

...anyway, great video! 🤣

The Jenkins quote about the first amendment emerging in the context of a thriving folk culture just kinda made me think about the whole thing where Disney's most popular and beloved movies are largely adaptations of fairy tales, folk tales, mythology, and public domain classic literature, and yet they're famously extremely protective of their IP and also the company that's typically been the most active in extending the length of copyright protections. If they're gonna keep ransacking the public domain to sell it back to us, the least we can do is make fanworks of Caked Up Timon.

I truly forgot about Zootopia. I saw Ginnfer Goodwin and my mind immediately went "Wow whoever cast this sure loved Once Upon a Time.... as they should. That shit was wild."

This is SUCH a good video essay oh my god. You touch on the things they've been scratching around in my brain for ages but I've never been able to quite articulate to myself. I feel like this idea/issue is something a lot of fandoms and particularly older fans have been grappling with recently. There's been a huge shift in fandom in general to mimicking consumer culture/behavior instead of the emphasis being on creation; which leads to things like people leaving reviews on AO3 fics.

One of the absolute worst things to happen to a fandom is the wall between the creatives/executives and fans breaking down. Disney is parking bulldozers at walled gardens

Timon should’ve sat on Pumba’s head 🫪 like why wouldn’t you keep them together?

EDIT: I mean a tiny version of Timon, not the caked up one

It's giving those corporate brands on twitter who'd try & get in on the joke. Like this isn't for you!!!

I am dying at "we are literally  going to space"

I know Disney owns everything now but the concept of Romy and Michelle 2 being announced as an upcoming Disney project is so funny to me

I heard the lineup of Disney movies and just kept rolling my eyes. Apart from Gatto, Clay, Hexed, Kingdom Hearts and Ghost Market, half of the stuff they announced just felt like unnecessary cash grabs.

31:06 okay so that's definitely his butt, and I would be betraying myself as a zoo educator whose office is a short walk from a meerkat habitat if I didn't point out that meerkats actually do spend most of their time running on all fours. They stand, but usually don't walk, on their back legs.

I dunno, maybe Neil Patrick Harris seems sinister or like the school bully in this because  he might actually be? I don't think a normal, kind-hearted person would commission an Amy Winehouse platter the way he did only 3 months after her death.
