I think this is one of the reasons why friendship becomes so important for gay men as we get older. We often don't have kids either, so we need to stick together as we get older.

I gave up years ago. Just tired of not being good enough. I'm over being a stepping stone for someone. It's lonely and isolating but it's better than the rejection and heartbreak.

I'm 64 now. Back in the 1980's it was fun. But that was MY time. I have since moved on from gay bars. I don't drink as much, I don't have to worry about a DUI, I don't have to fuss about my looks, I save a lot of money and heartache. Listen, I had my fun. It was a good run and now it's over. And that for me is good.

There's a difference between being alone and lonely. One can be lonely while in a relationship, and one can be alone without being lonely.

I just turned 70, still in pretty good shape and fairly attractive. I gave up on dating years ago. I live in an area where the closes gay bar is 60 miles away. I feel almost invisible now as far as dating. I cant remember the last time I touched someone or someone touched me. Grindr is a nightmare and wont go there again. Everyone wants the "porn star" look and body which is totally unreasonable and frankly insulting. I have straight friends I hang out with and they are great so I have some kind of social life. That's pretty much it for me and I have come to accept that at this time in my life. I have my health, so far and that's something I'm very grateful for.

I walked away from all this at 45, haha. I was just exhausted after being out there for 20+ years, and I had zero interest in the apps, where most of dating takes place now. At my age, I need peace and quiet. Serenity is a virtue.

I stopped dating ten years ago when I was 45.

When you have done the painful work to heal your own brokenness you have to accept that a lot of guys haven’t and won’t. It’s not even on their radar, but you can see it in their attitudes and behaviour. What many gay men settle for with relationships and hook ups is often a re-traumatising. It’s the exact opposite of connection.

Also, life deepens with age. You get wise, and you learn what real wellbeing and self acceptance feels like and why you just can’t trade that anymore. You can be who you are anywhere, you don’t need a ghetto, or a safe space. Especially a safe space that was never really that safe.

I am 56. I am HIV positive. I have had to take an early retirement due to AIDS related damage. I care for my older sister. I do not have a car.
I do not have anything to offer anyone. It is just not fair to expect someone to make adjustments to just be with me. So, I just stepped aside. It is not how I imagined my life, but here I am.

I 68 and am tired of being taken advantage of and being considered a sugar daddy and I am retired, and I am just shut up. I’d rather I’d like to have somebody as a friend instead of dating him.

As an older Irish gay man (55) living in the U.K. 25 years myself, I’ve become resigned to being alone and not finding a partner in the modern age post Covid, but that said I don’t really need an “other half” to feel whole and fulfilled - gay bars and clubs are closing down, as more gay people are being accepted in the straight world (which in some respects is a bad thing) and gay dating apps are too creepy and dangerous - the gay dating scene in the modern age is really only for the 20 somethings with perfect bodies that excludes older gay men and the concept of daddy culture puts people off, then we have the concept of the AI boyfriend - most of my interactions with other gay people now are exclusively online and across continents

I stopped dating at 49, I had fun with a guy for a decade until 57, on and off, I'm 61 now, things have changed so much 😂😂

I don't know, I think if my marriage ended I would probably just stay single. When I was on the market, dating was exhausting and soul-destroying. My sister, who's also in her 50s and divorced, feels the same way.

One other thing is the "mouthiness" i.e. "mean gays" that have to judge, when trying to get aquainted.

After several years of chatting online, I finally met a wonderful man. We spent a week together and it was heaven. Then we spent more time together and it turned around 180°. I realized I was dating a narcissist. I had no voice in the relationship and I realized I was getting pulled down as if there was an anchor attached to my legs deep into something scary. I had an inkling that there was some form of violence present, and I knew that I could never go any further with this person. When they realized that I was on to what was going on, the possibility of violence seemed to increase in my mind. I stopped sleeping with the person. One night he was out drinking and came to my home and broke into my bedroom. I had to call the police. I told the police the story of what was going on and their response was that they had seen this before and recommended I stop seeing the person or else it was just going to get worse. I took the police advice. It made him very angry. That was almost 2 years ago and he is still violently angry. But he knows not to come near me because I will call the police immediately. That experience scared me so much that I’m afraid to date anyone.
