I’m 50, been completely out since I was 19. In that time I’ve developed only one close friendship with another gay man, someone I dated for a little more than a year over 15 years ago and we are completely platonic. I have never felt part of the mythical “community” as I’m more center-right and introverted in my disposition. While I’ve been open to dating and establishing an enduring romantic relationships for 3+ decades, and forced myself into social situations that I find exhausting, I have found opportunities for sex are far more available than for dating. At this point living alone (with my dog) is the default, and unless I meet someone who I vibe with on a romantic and values level, that will remain the status quo. Gratitude for the peace and time to pursue my solo interests, but I remain hopeful that one day something more than friendship will present itself.

It’s not just gay men. Heterosexual men don’t want to get married anymore either—especially if they are successful and wealthy ("why get married? When you're rich, you have women at your feet without needing marriage"). In my opinion, social trends over the last few decades, such as feminism and liberalism, have made people more individualistic in general. No one wants to commit—unless you are truly attractive, wealthy, or special; that is, part of the top 3%. Since most people refuse to lower their standards, they prefer to remain single.

The best lesson that I learned was to stop chasing relationships. All around me, I see men trapped in dead relationships who are cheating or in some paper-thin, open relationship because they are afraid of being alone. Single is so much better.

I'm in my 70s and live alone but am fortunate to have neighbors I can rely on in case of emergency or just needing a ride to the doctor. As we get older, it's important to have people around though not necessarily living in the same household.

As an older Latino gay man who moved out at 18 years old and owns my home. After, the age of 40’s and if you can live alone its a personal achievement that does not mean you don’t have a social life. I enjoy my solitude, while attending school for life long learning, have a social life, family support, travel and research supports that decision. (solitude is a chosen, peaceful state of being alone, whereas loneliness is a painful, involuntary feeling of being disconnected.) also Voluntary vs. Involuntary Solo Living: Sociological studies (such as Eric Klinenberg's Going Solo) note that living alone after 40 is a mix of personal choice and systemic factors. Many older gay men actively choose the autonomy, routine, and peace of living alone after past relationships. Others face structural isolation due to historical factors like the HIV/AIDS epidemic, smaller dating pools, or a lack of traditional family support systems.

I'm 42 and have been single my whole life. I have a great career, own a nice house and don't need anyone for anything. I've met hundreds of guys in my life for hookups or dates but nothing has ever became a relationship. I can't sleep with another person in the same bed either. When I look at other gay relationships, they seem so performative and showing off.

As a widower at 58, today's dating landscape is just idiotic to me. Too many men, over 40, jumping on and off of apps, trauma dumping on a first date, and they get totally freaked out when feelings get involved ... his or mine. I am fine to live alone.

I am 40 as of March this year, and I am single (remained single since 2018). I think I'm past the point of actually forming a loving, serious relationship. I think that ship has sailed for me. I love my family, but I don't really have many friends - sometimes I scroll through the contacts list in my phone and realise that I haven't had a conversation with most of the names and numbers in there for 10 years. I think I might just get my best ideas out of my head and into the world, and then throw myself off the nearest cliff.

Great topic. This reminds me of the other quoted metric that close to 60% of gay men over 45 are single, and I fall into that group. I believe Pew found a similar number in its survey, published Feb. 2023. For me, yes I'm independent, but I have a great support group of friends. Family is 2,000 miles away, so that's mostly not an option. Honestly, I do like the peace and quiet of having my own space.

I wish you had been around when I was younger. This is spot on for me. I went to other gay therapists when I was younger, paid lot of money and was never told any of this. 61 and gave up ages ago. Quite honestly, I will be happy to cross over one day and be done with being gay. It's sad to feel that way.
