Getting Older as Gay Men... We See It Very Differently.

Are gay men afraid of getting older? As a gay couple in our 40s, Blue and I apparently have very different ideas about what aging and the fear of getting older actually means.
For Blue, the question brought up life experience, wisdom, watching the world change and realizing that more and more of it is completely outside of our control. My brain went somewhere slightly less profound. The physical side of aging. Looking older, having less energy, changes in your body and the fact that life looks different than it did 10 or 20 years ago.
So basically Blue contemplated the passage of time. I contemplated my face.
But that difference ended up taking us into a pretty interesting conversation about getting older as gay men, how our perspectives on aging have changed, and whether there’s a version of this conversation we think we’re 'supposed' to have versus what we actually feel.
Blue gets into the importance of answering the question honestly instead of reaching for the “right” answer. Because you can appreciate the wisdom and perspective that come with age and still have some complicated feelings about everything that comes along with it.
We also talk about our friend Heidi Clements, who Blue brings up as a great example of someone who embraces aging with humor, confidence and pride.

What about you? When you hear “fear of getting older,” where does your brain go first? The physical stuff? The bigger life stuff? Or are you one of those suspiciously well-adjusted people who genuinely doesn’t think about any of it?
