As soon as I hear the term "pitot tubes" I know the story of a surreal piloting nightmare comes next.

The most frustrating part of this for me is that it seems like everytime the Captain was putting the pieces together the F/O would say or do something that derailed the Captain's troubleshooting so many times that eventually he just lost track of it completely fell behind the plane.

I think what always punches through with these stories, is the rapidity of the problem the respective flight crew are facing. It's practically standard in every video that we, the audience, are around 25-30 mins into the video and then Petter reminds us that all this complexity has been occuring in mere minutes in the cockpit.
It really brings it home the confusion and pressure the pilots are facing, and honestly it humanises the event.

I've never had a fear of flying. But after binging most, if not all, of Petters videos, I scream in terror at the sight of swiss cheese....

Thank you for the opportunity to use our 757 in your video and thanks for the plug at the end! Your videos are always very educational and insightful to watch.

If I had a nickel every time I heard of atc not knowing the alt was just an onboard sensor i'd have a few

The actual audio from Aeroperu is just such a cacophony of alarms that it’s terrifying to hear, like you cannot think of anything else because it is all consuming

If anyone wonders why the B737 control yoke map holder has an "Unreliable Airspeed" checklist placard on it, here you go.

"OVERSPEED" and "STALL, STALL" warnings at the same time has to be the most confusing thing any pilot could hear. It's a situation where you have to go completely (or mostly completely back to radar altimiter/speed) visual, and just fly the plane in a regime of how it looks to fly.

I remember a guy on Air Crash Investigation saying, "It's easy to play Monday Morning Quaterback and say what those pilots should have done when you're sat safe and warm on the ground, but in the cockpit with all those alarms blaring at you and the instruments displaying nonsense and the overspeed clackers and the stick shaker going off at the same time, you might find it harder to think your way out of it".

Glad you finally covered this one, my uncle was the captain on this flight and because of this accident my mom wasn’t too eager to send to flight school, 😅 thank you Petter i think my family will find this one quite insightful.

When you think Mentour Pilot videos can’t get any better, as they’ve hit the ton, they actually get better again, like here not only scientific but also historic explanation of Pitot Tubes, and generally the whole system. The best explanation of a very misunderstood system I’ve ever heard. Wow.

@mostlyvoid.partiallystars 1 month ago

That is quite possibly the world’s most unfortunately reliable roll of Scotch tape. Holy bananas.

@TheIdiotsHaveTakenOver 1 month ago

I can't imagine what the ground crew, who worked on that aircraft just before the accident, must have been feeling. I worked on aircraft, with the Navy, and, thankfully, no helicopter I performed maintenance on ever had an incident.

Pilot training and emergency checklists are the most important lesson here, but imo, controllers should also be trained to let pilots know that indications like altitude and airspeed come from their own instruments. If a pilot asks for their own altitude on frequency it should immediately trigger a red flag, the controller should instead say "My indications are based on what your aircraft reports, are you having indication issues?"

@foxhero1337 1 month ago

Welp, I feel old. Saying "over 30 years ago," and it's 1996 a year that I remember pretty clearly makes me feel so ancient.

@matthewdebeer8453 1 month ago

I think the most frustrating part of this for me is the controller continuing to read back the transponder values despite the pilots saying multiple times that they had unreliable speed and altitude data. The lack of CRM between captain and co-pilot and the forgotten tape on the sensors is also aggravating, but that controller didn’t have any of the same mental load going on as those pilots.

Feels crazy to hear 2 minutes since takeoff, after you talking 23 minutes.. i cannot comprehend how fast this happens, and im watching you last like 2 years..

@Stewart-u5z 1 month ago

After so many decades of commercial aviation, it seems incredible that no one thought to use brightly colored tape to protect the static ports. Especially when the pitot covers are orange and have flags that say "remove before flight." I also wonder if there were any prior indications that the FO would panic in a stressful situation. This accident is so depressing...
