Blair Witch unfortunately lives in the shadow of its (incredible) marketing, but seeing it far, far after all that hype had passed, I think it's undersung as a film on its own merits. The acting is so naturalistic, the pacing and tension so tight... In the sea of imitators in its genre to follow, it stands unreasonably tall. A genuinely incredible horror film.

Terrific breakdown. I'm "in the business" so to speak, the year Blair Witch debuted at Sundance a colleague was there, when I saw him back in LA he handed me an unlabeled VHS tape and said "watch this." I asked what is it...."just watch it." It was The Blair Witch Project, before anyone knew what that was. I took it home, watched it that night....it was one of the most terrifying experiences I've ever had watching a movie, probably the most. And I've seen a ton of horror movies. I wish everyone had seen Blair Witch like that. My friend and I still talk about it, I'm forever grateful to him for handing me that tape and saying nothing other than watch it. I still remember the huge grin on his face, he knew what I was in for. Such a genius movie, and a genius breakdown great work. Happy the algorithm overlords recommended your channel to me.

There'll never be another media campaign like the first Blair Witch. I'll never forget it. Everyone in high-school was like "no it's real they really can't find these 3 people" 😂 It's was incredible! Glad I got to experience it as it happened

The claims that Heather's performance was bad were always insane to me. Her performance MADE the movie. If it weren't for her performance, the movie would only be noted as one that had a very interesting and unique marketing campaign. The performances of her, Josh, and Mike (and her especially) are the reasons why people still talk about the movie almost 30 years later, and why it can STILL scare people, even now that we all know it wasn't real.

To this day, I still consider The Blair Witch Project the scariest film I have ever seen. I was fifteen at the time and it freaked me out. Thanks for covering it

Wow. This really is the only deep dive you’ll ever need.

Also, the fact that you were born in ‘99 makes me feel extraordinarily old.

"They released something called an official Screen saver and I'm too young to know what that means" Makes me FEEL SO OLD. So to explain back in the olden days of the computer if it idle'd long enough an animation would begin playing on the monitor and all of your programs would begin running as a background process. It worked similar to putting your laptop to sleep nowadays.

56:36 As someone that spent a great deal of time in the industry…

They got swindled. They ABSOLUTELY could’ve came to an agreement for part of the IP.

John Carpenter did that with Halloween some 20 years prior.

They just got swindled by predatory reps trying to make a quick buck off of them.

Artisan only sent the actors fruit baskets when they hit $100M in box office.

That’s the type of human beings these executives are.

I was a teenage horror fan living in "the woods outside of Burkettsville, MD" when the movie came out. When I went to see it, I remember thinking there were more people in the theater than in all of Burkettsville. People would wander into my back yard looking for the Blair Witch. My mom got interviewed by an Australian newspaper. It was a wild time.

Shelley Duvall was nominated for a Razzie for her role as Wendy in The Shinning so yeah.... what the hell do they know.

I remember watching this in the cinema, after i had to walk home to the farm I lived on, and I took the shortcut to save me over an hour. One of the fields was blocked, and I had to go through the woods. Later that week, I signed up for the 100-metre sprint in school, as I had discoved i had a new talent! 😂

Ebert sums it up right at the beginning. Three film school students armed with nothing but a 16mm camcorder. No big studio. Grass roots marketing campaign. And they changed film history and helped pioneer a new genre.

The only thing I hate about it is what the actors went through. They got paid a couple thousand dollars for both acting and filming it when the movie made so many movies. Not to mention they were left out to dry by the publisher during the market campaign because the public wanted them to be dead, because that’d make it real.

I skipped out of the office in the middle of the day in 1999 to watch this film. That was an incredible year for the movies.

a completely unprompted notion that i always had, even though there's no reason to think it based on the movie itself, is that Heather WAS the blair witch. i know there's nothing to outright suggest that in the film, but it's always a vibe i got for some reason. perhaps it was the fact it was all her idea and she's the last one carrying the camera at the end. like maybe her dropping the camera isn't because she was attacked but because she finally had the boys in her lair and could drop the act. possibly the witch possessed her or was just influencing her decisions to guide the group to her lair. total head canon, but when i see heather i see the blair witch.

When you look it up, it says they were supposed to receive a 1% share of the profits, which would’ve been about $2.5 million
Instead, they got a settlement for $300,000 each
Reminds me of the Texas chainsaw massacre, where the people who make all the money just find it impossible to do the right thing
When they were casting for avengers or doing it or whatever the MCU and studio did not want to pay Chris Evans and Christopher Hemsworth and such what Robert Downey Jr. thought they deserved for how popular it had all become
So he told the studio you can either pay them what they’re worth or you can find someone else to play Iron Man
That’s what I’m talking about
It also said the directors earned tens of millions of dollars from profit-sharing
I mean, seriously what is wrong with these people?

I always thought his tongue was in the bundle and that's how the witch lured them with Josh's voice.

whats ridiculous about the "snot scene" is how iconic the entire monologue is when you remove the snot... or just not focus on it. During the time, everyone wouldn't shut up about it. Scary Movie lampooned it (in a really unfunny way). but, it was the coinfession of a girl she knows is going to die. that put both sadness, and dread in my heart. just the way she whispers, "I'm going to die out here." it gives me the chills every time I watch that scene, especially knowing what comes next.

I was 16 when I watched in theaters. Couple weeks ago my theater just re- released a 9pm showing. My daughters got my ticket and invited me. Full circle. They around same age I was. In my top 15 horror movie.

The theory that the guys in Blair Witch planned the entire thing as a way to redrum the girl, manipulating her the entire way, makes it even creepier. There was basically no witch at all, just two boys with an evil desire to torture and end their friend’s life.
