Sherlock Season 1 Episode 1: A Study in Pink!
This is shaping up to be the perfect series for me! Gut punch at the start, and the characters are so important!!! Martin Freeman is outstanding, and Benedict Cumberbatch is the perfect Sherlock (though he's the only Sherlock I've seen 😅).

Making Watson an adrenaline junkie who has been far too bored since returning home was a brilliant choice! My biggest issue with previous adaptations is that they never knew how to make Watson interesting. This one does, and not only that, they make him a co-leading character with Holmes.

They did a great job with this series. Anytime a new series starts with a historically beloved character, there's some apprehension because expectations are usually higher. They did not disappoint with this one.

Mark Gatiss, who plays Mycroft, is co-creator of the show, and one of its three writers.

In Watson's first meeting with (the then unnamed) Mycroft, they pushed hard to convince the viewers who were familiar with the Holmes canon that that was Moriarty. The dialogue, the nuances and implications all pointed in that direction. And if you've read the books, you know that Mycroft is canonically a huge man, tall and very heavy, so having skinny Mark Gatiss play him is... counter to type at best, physically. It all led to the viewers who were already major Holmes fans absolutely sure that this was Moriarty, so the reveal at the end was great, and caught pretty much everyone. :)

Where Watson got shot is actually an in-joke. In the books, Conan Doyle occassionally wrote it as a shoulder wound, and sometimes as a leg wound. That was almost certainly just an over-sight (authors are usually advised to create character cards listing things like that, just so they don't trip themselves up) but some fans love to debate if it has a hidden meaning - an inevitability when you write mysteries where little details matter.

The real magic trick with the adaption of Sherlock Holes, is how they promoted Watson to be a co-lead. Some of the episodes and storylines in the next seasons, are centered around Watson.

I’ve been a Sherlock Holmes fan for over 50 years and this is a great adaptation. Very different from the original while still being true to the spirt and with great writing and acting.

Benedict Cumberbatch looks adorable with his hair like that.

Andrew Scott is so delicious as Sherlock's nemesis. Such a breath of fresh air, he is.

Oh! This version of Sherlock is tremendous! Cumberbatch and Freeman together? Forget it! Top notch!

What I think funny about this show is that when it was released on BBC, it was 3 episodes in January and that's is, see you next year, but season 2 or 3, I don't remember, ends with a cliffhanger, and the audience had to wait for years before seeing the following season, because the main actors were off to New Zealand to play a hobbit and a dragon in the same trilogy, and I love that even in Middle-Earth they got to be together, someway xD

The performances are so good in this show that they actually overshadow the crimes and mysteries. This entire series is worth watching for Freeman and Cumberbatch alone.

Bit of trivia: That bit about “scuff marks near the power connection” @10:08 is pulled straight from the original 100+ year old stories….except in the original it was a pocket watch rather than a phone and the “power port” was where you inserted the key for winding. :)

i love the parallel towards the end between john and sherlock
john has to pick between 2 buildings and sherlock has to pick between 2 vials

Rupert Graves (LeStade) always great in all he does...and the best hair when he was young!

Fun fact. London cab drivers have to pass a theory test on all the streets and areas of London called "The Knowledge." It's widely regarded as one of the hardest tests in the world. You get in any Black cab in London and ask for any address in the Capital and they can take you there. Scientists have actually done studies on the memory centres of Cabbies' brains because they're so interesting.

Fun fact this series pioneered showing texts etc floating on screen, rather than doing close-ups on phone screens.

It's funny my father is the second largest collector of Sherlock Holmes books and memorabilia in north America and 3rd largest world wide. He has Converted over 2,300 sqft of his basement into his library of Sherlock Holmes books of all editions and languages floor to ceiling in custom bookcases. Which always is wild to me knowing there are only 56 short stories and 4 books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes.
