I love to see people make an effort in pronouncing our UK place names, so ‘Thank You’ for that Brian 🙏🏻🥰🇬🇧👍🏼

I was in charge of and did the carving part of the latest restoration of the main facade of the porch.

My home town. Walk past the Cathedral very day and still am amazed how they built it.

I can see Ely Cathedral from my back garden using binoculars and a trampoline! Alternatively, I can sit in a pub garden in the next village and see it across the fens (flatlands) and on a huge rise in the distance. There used to be a very decent RAF hospital there years ago which I used a couple of times whilst in the RAF.

Nice to see Roger showing his interest in historic buildings, he's normally showing us how to repair a leaking ballcock etc.

The guy narrating this video, Roger Bisby is a builder. He has a channel called: Skill Builder. It’s a source of informative demonstrations of DIY jobs in the home, big and small.

When his steeplejack days ended, Fred Dibnah made a TV programme about Ely Cathedral. It's on YouTube.

The first lightning conductor on a major cathedral was installed on St. Paul's Cathedral in London in 1769

the octagon is one of those details that makes medieval engineering feel almost modern. After the central tower collapsed, the solution wasn’t simply “rebuild it stronger” but to redistribute the load with a lighter timber structure and a radically different geometry. I film overlooked places and the history hiding in their fabric on my own channel, so this sort of structural problem-solving is exactly what pulls me in. Really enjoyed seeing Roger explain the building rather than just admire it, and King Boomer’s reaction makes the scale feel fresh again. Ely isn’t impressive because it survived unchanged. It’s impressive because people kept redesigning it to survive.

My hometown! ❤

This is just up the road from me and it is always impressive to see from a long way away due to the surrounding fens

I didn't expect to see this on your channel! You're so down to earth and open minded, enjoyed watching this with you (something I'd never watch on my own). Keep up the great work King and Queen Boomer, lovely couple who'd be welcome in the UK anytime! Thanks for keeping me company. Yes I was at the pub earlier is that why this video made me emotional haha? Anyway appreciate you guys.

I'm with you on this. Old buildings I also find interesting. The first thing I always wonder is how they ever built it. More please !!

I visited Ely Cathedral for the 1st time on September 14th. Stunning building with wonderful history.

A few years back there was the huge fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, there was a documentary about the Paris Fire Dept doing a fire inspection of the Cathedral, and while they were filming the documentary the Cathedral caught fire and it made for an incredible documentary and the Cathedral almost burnt to the ground. Oh and just a small point Thomas Cromwell and Oliver Cromwell were in no way related , the also lived almost a 100 years apart but had no connection other than names.

William Golding's novel The Spire is about the building of a medieval church spire. Great novel

Fun fact- a good friend of mine got married there. Absolutely stunning cathedral. The city itself is lovely too, the area around the riverside has a great restaurant nearby, also a couple of fabulous gelato places.

Lovely place to visit. Great view from either tower too. Best view I ever had of the ‘ship of the fens’ was one snowy January night steering a boat home to Horningsea on the river Ouse. It was lit up beautifully.

When I went there the woman who gave us the (free) tour was brilliant. Extremely enthusiastic and very funny and the cathedral was pretty impressive too!
