Yes, you will need to read all five books of the Hitchhikers Guide Trilogy.

The old radio series was a piece of art

"A towel is just about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can carry. Partly because it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapours; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a mini-raft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand combat; wrap it around your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you — daft as a brush, but very very ravenous); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course you can dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (non-hitchiker) discovers that a hitchhiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, washcloth, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet-weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitchhiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitchhiker might accidentally have "lost." What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the Galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with."

Ah yes, the movie to the only trilogy with five parts.

34:40 if you read the books, you will have to get through a few, but you will eventually find out exactly why the petunias thought this.

I can tell by your reaction to the humor that you will adore the books.

Stephen Fry is the narrator….

Zaphod's second head is supposed to be on his shoulder in the books, and he had it in a birdcage on his shoulder as a pirate at the party where he picks up Trillian lol was an odd choice to make it be somehow on his neck

The book is what got me into reading in middle school. Hilarious.

Douglas Adams was a truly brilliant man!

My favourite story out of THHGTTG books is the story Arthur tells about being at a railway station waiting for a train sitting at a table with an unknown person.  They are sharing a packet of biscuits.

That is all I will say about it.

I'm sure this actually happened to Douglas Adams in whatever was his reality - it seems the sort of thing he would get involved in.

42:01  I stopped panicking when Bill Nighy said this, and felt a sense of tranquility flow over me knowing that every being in the universe gets paranoid.

The last picture that shows up at the end of the movie is a picture of Douglas Adams. He passed away exactly four months before 9/11, meaning it's been a little more than 25 years since he passed.

I love The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It literally changed the way I think about things, which is the highest of praise for a book. This movie, flawed as it is, holds a special place in my heart. I have hope someone will give it a more faithful adaptation in the future. It's already been a radio play, a television series and has had audio books made from it. Another reboot would almost be expected at this point.

I have a black with golden book called: The Ultimate Hitchhiker's guide.
The whole story: Five complete novels and one story.
One of my favorite quotes: There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the best 5-book trilogy ever written! RIP Douglas Adams. He left us all wanting more.

It started as a radio play. Then books,tv, and movies.  Each is quite different. All are worthwhile.  The movie is the only one in which Arthur and Trillian get together.

I think you’d love the trilogy of books, all five of them.

"so long and Thanks for all the Fish" best line in any movie ever...
