its weird/cool how much more grounded in reality the graphic novel is compared to how whimsical the movie is.

The coolest part is that the stone Coraline received is an adder stone, a piece in folklore where it’s believed that by looking through the hole in the stone will allow you to see through the illusions of spirits like witches and fairies.

Completely random fact, but in the 2009 stop motion movie, Mr. Bobinsky wears a medal that was awarded by the Sovet Government to the Liquidators. Civilians and military personnel tasked with cleanup operations in Chernobyl.

It's so odd seeing Coraline without her blue hair, but then again, this is based on the book. Her blue hair, and Wybie were both exclusive to the movie.
I also can't decide which version of the Other Father is more horrifying when he starts to lose his usefulness to the Other Mother: A decaying blob of dough, or a wilting not-quite-human pumpkin...😳

It is such a crazy comparison how the graphic novel emphasize the horror in a subtle way compare to the film that has more whimsical yet creepy vibe

Ngl one of the things the movie does better than the book. It’s a slow build up to Coraline being offered the button eyes. Kinda like The Beldam tries to lower her guard before ensnaring the prey

I love the inclusion of a fairy ghost child, suggesting that there may be other worlds out there that the other mother lures from.

In the movie they could've added the simple quote in the book "When you're scared but you still do it anyway, that's brave."

Other mother in the film was scary on it's own but after reading this graphic novel I'm not going to lie I was like... primally terrified at the idea that Coraline was being stalked by the other mother's hand for DAYS.  In the film she knows she has to ditch the key almost immediately same day after getting home but the thought of spending days being stalked and persued by a disembodied hand while trying to keep a key safe and legit even if you told somebody noone would believe you anyway IS TERRIFIYING

And remember kids: pirating stops you from lining the pockets of alleged abusers.

The thing that I find interesting between the exchange of Coraline and Other Mother is that at first she swears on her mother's grave, when Coraline asks if she had a grave in the first place Other Mother responds "Oh yes, I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back.” Then, Coraline asks her to swear on something else. This interaction says a lot about both characters and it's one I still remember from the first time I read the book. It is also clever foreshadowing.
Coraline, in a way, feels like a modern fairytale inspired in the interaction of children and feyfolk, but I guess this part is pretty much my point of view since I grew with old irish folktales. So take it as you wish, in any case a good read for children and adults.

realizing how much LAIKA studios elevated my experience of coraline

The most disturbing part of this story is the monster who wrote it.

I loved Coraline as a kid. But oh boy! Who knew all these years later the scariest part of it would turn out to be the author! 😅

I think it's really interesting how Coraline's age impacts the way people sympathize with her and interpret her actions.  In the movie she's much younger, so it's easier to understand her boredom, impulsive decisions, etc. Drawing her as a pre-teen/teen in this novel gives her a completely different vibe. I can't decide which one I like more!

Also I can't be the only one that is very off put by all versions of Mr. Bobinsky💀 Even the blue one in the movie gives me a weird vibe and I'm fairly certain he's supposed to be written as a likable character.

So, there was no Whyborn in the original. She was even more lonely.
Edit: just found out he's Wyborn, not Whyborn. And his family name is Lovat, which feels crazy because I had a Lovat as a director of summer camp in university.

I think this version might be more in line with the original novel. From the living ancient hallway, the other father being some gelatnis creature near the end, the other mother looking more uncanny from her real mom from the start, and no Whybe who was only a movie original character. even the rats behavior and the talking dogs.

It's very interesting that one of the kids has wings. It shows that maybe she really is a fairy that the other mother has captured and eaten.
