How Dimension Films KILLED Hellraiser

JoBlo Horror Originals

Hellraiser began as one of horror’s most disturbing and original franchises, but under Dimension Films, the series slowly lost its identity. What started with Clive Barker’s vision of pain, pleasure, and forbidden desire became a run of direct-to-video sequels, recycled scripts, and barely connected stories with Pinhead added in to keep the brand alive. In this video, we break down how Dimension Films took one of horror’s most iconic concepts and turned it into one of the strangest franchise declines in genre history.

They had a written by Barker and directed by Carpenter crossover movie and they... passed on it.
Holy hell.

22:51 where's the inevitable meta sequel where it turns out Pinhead was running Dimension and the whole bad movie run was just a plot to increase suffering

The Direct to DVD entries were a strange ones. They felt like Law and Order movies with Pinhead inserted.

Nothing but respect for Doug Bradley for sticking to the character for 80% of the franchise. He was one of the first to admit the quality went down. Somehow he stuck with the character and did the best he could to keep Pinhead alive. I was hyped to hear he came back for the game.

I did a reverse marathon a few years ago. Best way to watch the series, gets better as you go!

“Angels to some, Demons to others”

Still one of the best lines in horror film history.

It's a meta thing, you don't get it. Witnessing what happened to the franchise, it's such a sight to show you.

So I was almost 14. Went to the theater to see the first Hellraiser. That first panoramic view of the Cenobites f'd me up.😵‍💫

I looked up Alan Smithee on IMDB and couldn't believe how much work this guy has done.

Studios were the literal hell for the franchise

The dialogue of pinhead and Freddy Kruger would make for a great crossover

The moment when horror series like this, Amityville, and Children of the Corn ended up to the Direct-To-Video/Tv Movie, it's a sign where they become "Franchise Zombie" , where series of franchise keeps going but decline in qualities they've became 'decayed' like a living corpse because the company trying NOT to lose the rights they got from the first place a long time ago

The newest Hellraiser was good. The actor that played Pinhead killed it. He was definitely a breath of fresh air. I’m just glad he brought his own take to the character and didn’t just try to be the same character.

21:19 they wanted him to sign the NDA because the last time they let him read a script he publicly talked about it being bad. They didn’t want him to open his mouth and ruining potential sales.

My problem with the direct to dvd movies were they didn't feel like hellraiser films. The studio bought pre-made scripts and just inserted pinhead. They weren't written as hellraiser films so the cenobites felt like side characters.

I think combining the idea of the cube and Hellraiser where people are trapped in the lament configuration in their own hell/heaven while it’s being solved by the people trapped with different cenobites getting to torture people instead of walking around being henchmen/women like in the other movies would be a cool movie

18:56 to this day I hold Deader up to be the worst major studio produced movie I have ever seen. It's what they forced people in Guantanamo Bay to watch.

They should have made the third with Kirsty and made Julia a cenobite (could have recast as I know her actress did not want to stay but could have worked fine if she became a cenobite). Kept the Filming to the UK as the original 2. I'd say it would have been great
