Fighting at night was absolutely a thing in World War 1 it's just that certain armies didn't really do it and had policies against it like the Americans. Canadians though had specific divisions that only fought at night. Canadians fielded a lot of storm troops and they would go way down the line at night sneak into the trenches and fight their way through primarily with melee weapons. You can look up some of the exploits of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment if you'd like to know a bit more. My great-great-grandfather fun with the Canadian Corps and we don't know exactly what he did during the war because he never talked about it with his kids or anything but we have a lot of his medals.
