"there's seemingly no ideology being overtly criticized" applies to like 95% of media these days. There's not enough profit in it

"There are new owners [...] and now at last, we shall be free."

Absolutely insane even just on a writing level

I remember learning about this in highschool. My teacher took the  view that the farm was better off in the hands of the farmer, ignoring the fact that he represents the other half of the extremes

I hope we will have an adult indie animated adaptation that has the original ending

How did Andy Serkis trick Angel fucking Studios into producing that adaptation

I love watching reviews of "bad movies" because I know eventually I'll watch someone finding a bit of genius in them and that's so cool. Finding treasure in trash is my jam.

My grade 3 teacher in 1983 thought Animal Farm (1954) was a great movie to show in class one afternoon.  At the end I was in tears hiding under my desk lol.

Seth Rogan laugh on point.

Nothing prepared me for quite possibly the only bit of genuine praise ever shown towards 2026 Animal Farm (or the literal nightmare fuel of 1999 Animal Farm, please delete that from my memory kthx)

Not having seen the movie, and only knowing the 1999 ending from this video, I do feel like that ending  could be taken as threatening, like, "if another family buys the farm, we're gonna make sure they fly right, or else". But, even then, the most charitable interpretation is that, we the animals are doomed to forever be ruled, and the only thing we can do is pressure our rulers so they don't... drink on the job?

Could you make a video about Art Spiegelman's Maus?

Maybe the "good ending" for Animal Farm would be one where the animals go back to living in the wild, but I guess when you're born into a system it's hard to think of a life without it. Idk I haven't read the book since middle school

The blond "Von trapp " family in the second movie seemed terrifying to me. And I thought the movie makers may have used that imagery on purpose. Maybe it  was to say that outward charm and convention is still dangerous?

Funny thing is I think the ambigious ending for the first adaptation kinda works, regardless of the motive.

Have they learned from their mistakes? Will it just hapoen again? After all the first pig revolution was also seen as a triumph. Who is to say the next leader is better? Who is to say they learned to not have keaders? From a pure story standpoint it works, I think.

your letterboxd is a goldmine

I am currently working on a fantasy. The civilization is in decline, the priest's power is diminishing (the gods are getting bored with their playthings), the monarchy is inbred & ineffectual, various others in power consolidating it through bribery, assassination, & general violence...you get the picture. Of course there are prophecies (this is a fantasy after all), but there are so many of them, they all seem to contradict each other. There is no chosen one. Instead there is an anarchic-socialist uprising, starting with the bakers, that spreads throughout the city & then the kingdom.
Great video.
See you next time.

I remember the 1954 version being broadcasted in my country of origin (Hungary) several times when I was a kid. It was one of the first animated movies aimed at an adult audience I've ever seen - I must have been six or seven, and I was immediately fascinated that animation like this existed. It certainly contributed to me becoming a fan of animation in my adulthood.
Edited for grammar

I love that you're talking about animal farm again! Don't usually comment but, I've been watching your videos for years, since around seventh grade (I am going to be in 12th next year), and have learned so much from them! They have been helpful in me finding my favorite artists and are great for use in scholar bowl. Just wanted to say thanks and I love your videos!

Even if it will never happen, I dream of Wes Anderson adapting Animal Farm, Isle Of Dogs-style.

I always interpreted it as reinforcement of the idea that this process is circular.
When the second revolution strikes, we already know what will happen next, because we just watched an entire film explaining it.

I interpreted it as an intentionally open ending, yet one hinting at circularity
