I love Skyrim because I used to live there. A few years back I was very ill, hooked up to machines both in hospital and at home in bed for a couple of years; it was terrible, but I was on a lot of powerful painkillers that made it easy to detach my mind, so I spent 6000+ hours wandering through snowy mountains and fighting dragons instead. I think the collective modders of Skyrim may have saved my life, or at least my sanity; I had very little money because I couldn't work, and this wonderful endless tide of creativity made it possible for me to float along for all that time, never getting bored or running out of new ways to play. So now, when I go back once or twice a year from pure nostalgia, it feels like visiting somewhere I was happy once, somewhere deeply familiar, like an old childhood home.

I discovered Skyrim in 2012 after the death of my husband. I had 2 young children and was pregnant with my 3rd. I would put my kids to bed and then spend hours roaming the lands of Skyrim. Everything about the game, from the scenery, the soundtrack, the playability, was so very cathartic for me. Now, almost 13 yrs later, I still play skyrim every night before bed. In October I'm getting married and 3/4 of the dinner music will be from the skyrim and oblivion soundtracks!

When I first played Skyrim I wasn't allowed to. Skyrim was my older sisters game, I was not allowed to touch it. Every time I played it felt sneaky and fun. We would talk about the world together and she would get suspicious that I knew so much if I wasn't allowed to play it. She passed away shortly after she got the game, she loved this game. She was an artist who drew a lot of creativity from this games vampires, werewolves, undead. She had amazing art for this game and her other interests, every time I boot this game up it reminds me of her. She passed before she could experience the Dawnguard DLC, I wish she could've seen it she absolutely would have loved it. I would go into her old save, walk around for a bit, look at her journal and the things she did get to experience. I'm grateful to this game for driving her creativity, and giving us something to bond about. Miss her everyday dude.

Skyrim to me feels like coming home. The landscapes, the background music, it is the perfect place to unwind after a hectic workday.

you can do that in vanilla Skyrim.

To me, the best video game experience possible is Skyrim VR with a bunch of immersion mods. It’s the closest thing to living an alternative fantasy life.

Just recently, I was a vampire from Cyrodiil, defending the Empire’s interests Vlad the Impaler–style, getting my drinks from the Queen’s neck (because I only accepted the best).
Another time, I was a mercenary, going from village to village, taking jobs from billboards and solving problems, crossbow in hand.
At another point, I was a humble hunter, bow and arrow, selling my game until I could buy my own home.
Or an alchemist, with my own shop, hiring mercenaries to protect me while going on expeditions for resources.
Or a Dark Elf, a pilgrim traveling to holy sites (and apparently of great interest to the various deities of the land, who kept asking me to do things).

Some of the mods for VR truly are game changer.

The ad reading "11.11.11" just for each 1 to spin around and spell "SKYRIM" - the absolutely volcanic eruption of hype that caused in me will simply never be matched again lol

i got introduced to skyrim by my husband back in 2019 when i was a few months pregnant. im grateful for skyrim helping me through my postpartum depression, covid, and the stress of life in general. the soundtrack and the ambiance music of elder scrolls had kept me focused on my studies in college. i still play skyrim, still listen to the soundtrack music, and my son (6 yo) now, watches me play and listens to the soundtrack too!

Watching your playthrough was a joy because it was so honest. You weren't trying to play the game "optimally," you were just playing it to have fun and have an experience that, as you noted, was uniquely yours. I can't experience Skyrim for the first time again, but I can do so vicariously through others. I do hope you do another playthrough, whether with a modlist or vanilla. There are some really good expansion mods available, like The Forgotten City, Project AHO, and the daddy of them all, VIGILANT. The Gate to Sovngarde collection on Nexus, for example, is phenomenal and includes several of these expansion mods, along with a lot of custom tweaks by the creator of the collection, and others, to make them all work well together.
