Appealing to the male gaze will always go wrong. it will ALWAYS turn on you ESPECIALLY when you are a woman. I hope more women learn from this.

I doubt there's a single drop of her bath water in there. and hello? what happened to safety regulations for products

idk after sydney was in euphoria i feel like she was being hyper sexualised without her consent and stuff like this just feels like a shift from "stop sexualising me" to "fine i cant stop you from sexualising me but at least i'll profit from it"

Very refreshing to see someone who can actually discuss all the conversations around this kind of pandering that Hollywood/music stars do. Way too many people just says “feminism is choice” and call it a day but they forget that we all exist in a society and we shouldn’t praise harmful choices because feminism isn’t about harming women.

I have no boobs, basic butt, however I am small at look really young. Let me say, I experienced the same sxualazing and objectification from older men from like 13, the worst was through 15-17. My boss at my old part-time job at my 17 was straight up openly claiming that he “thought I was 13” at my interview for the job, I was "so hot" and was "totally flirting with him", then he offered me a sx work job. I am not even kidding... sorry for oversharing, I just want these experiences to be included in the conversation about objectification and dehumanization of young girls bc I experienced this through my teenage years too (and not just me)

It’s because people are confusing personal sexual preferences (having kinks) with criticizing mass distributed and marketed images of women that reinforce harmful gender stereotypes and power dynamics in a patriarchal society. The difference is that these images depicting women as objects and “lesser than men” are systemic. It’s not an isolated or personal event. It’s systemic sexism.

Something about a guy buying bathwater-infused soap turns me off more than the thought of a guy literally cheating. 🤢 Like.. it's so pathetic that it just makes my skin crawl.
Edit: Sydney.. my girl.. how you gonna say you're tired of being sexualized and then come out with bathwater soap..?🤦‍♀️

i don't understand the whole sabrina isn't appealing to men thing. she definitely is! having some lyrics where she makes fun of them or complains about them doesn’t mean anything when she's constantly catering to them. when she was getting feminist critique guess who was defending her... CONSERVATIVE MEN😭 that's how you know she messed up with that album cover because intent doesn't equal impact.

Sabrina Carpenters album cover is just so... distasteful. Its giving normalization of abusive tendencies. Especially as someone in the music industry, who is well aware of the abuse that woman go through at the hands of powerful men.

really frustrating to see so many women online talk about how sabrina represents the "female gaze" or that the album cover is "satire". if it was satire, the roles on the cover would be reversed, or posed in a different way thats also sexy like u said. theres no such thing as the "female gaze" when the subject line is always MEN, regardless if her music is making fun of them and for the girlies!!!!!!

It's so good to hear other women's stories. I started puberty when I was 8. I got my period, I started growing, my breasts grew, my hips started to widen. I swear that the sexualization of my body by kids at school, strangers on the street and teachers started when I was a little kid. The worst were grown men who looked at me and talked to me when I was 9-17. I felt like a sheep among wolves. I also couldn't wear shorts to school and sleeveless shirts because I would immediately get a warning or they would call my mom. When I became an adult (18 in my country) suddenly the interest decreased drastically... scary and disgusting.

38:00 to me “Man’s Best Friend” Is known as a dog and she’s on all fours so do the math. It doesn’t look good.

Generally, Sabrina’s music is enjoyed by women and her image is enjoyed by men. If the cover was subversive then she’d be holding a knife or something so the messaging would be completely different rather than recreating what we saw in the 50s adverts without any visual change. But she got what she wanted: people talking and attention which brings profit. Great video!

My problem with Sabrina now is I feel she is playing too much into her being small and at times she dresses like a girl.. on purpose.. I just think it’s harmful and it’s starting to be a bit much

One actress who was constantly type-casted as the "sexy blonde" character and successfully got out of it by fighting back against Hollywood's misogyny is Charlize Theron. And it goes to show that sometimes it's thrust upon certain actresses because they are beautiful, and that they don't all go along with it but instead try to dismantle our expectations for them and all women

Thank you for saying what you did about Sabrina's album cover. I like her music, but I was uncomfortable when I saw the picture. And sadly, we've all been dressing up Sabrina as a "female icon" even when she's literally on her knees for men, miming blowing the microphone, performing in lingerie, and pretending she's going down on guys behind screens during her concerts. She has been playing to the male gaze since Feather, but the fact that women are the ones calling this behavior "empowerment" is so backwards to me. I've had so many feminists jump down my throat for saying that. They say "She's not pandering, she's being witty. She's making fun of the male gaze." But how exactly? By literally putting herself into the male fantasy? First of all... she's about as subtle with her witticisms as a neon sign. It's just cringey and painfully obvious she's talking about sex. And second... Where is the self-respect? She has talent. She shouldn't have to fall back on gimmicks like this. Adele and Billie Eilish didn't have to degrade themselves like this to make it. And the fact that Sabrina essentially gaslit her fans by saying they're the ones who forced her to be sexual is insane to me. I lost so much respect for her. And I know there are going to be a lot of people who disagree with me and defend her. That's fine. I just think it's hypocritical to put out empowering music for girls, then behave that way the rest of the time. Either you're playing to the male gaze or you're empowering young women. You can't do both without backlash.

Everytime i bring up sabrina being for the male gaze people are so confused, its quite obvious 😭

I feel like appealing to the male gaze is just not worth it; not only does it reduce your piblic image to a male audience, it straight up relies only on your appearance for everything—it's not sustainable—and this is not even taking into account your dignity and self respect as a woman. Yes, one could say it's a pretty "smart" way of getting quick cash, but is "ruining" your public image really worth it for money? I don't see the point in doing that if you're not even struggling with money, it's just straight up greed.

30:28 In movies, the nerdy girl changes herself to be more attractive to get the guy, and the nerdy guy gets the girl because she changes her standards
