I'd watch an entire series of Darcy threatening terrible people with haunted antiques.

I want a 'Tales from the Crypt'-style anthology movie about the various cursed items in Darcy's store and the havoc they wreak on the people who buy them.

First "hoyevver" drops at 0:24. We are rewarded for our devotions!

A big part of what I REALLY like about Oddity is that it takes the “escaped mental patient” trope and twist it back into reality. Ultimately, people with mental illness are more likely to be hurt than to hurt anyone. Their status in life is tainted, their word less believable, and they are, despite the statistics, seen as automatically dangerous.

Oddity plays on our fears and assumptions before it makes it very clear that the most dangerous person in this movie is the one who holds power over the mentally ill. He uses, degrades and threatens under the guise of concern with his “professional medical opinion”. He groomed a patient into his subordinate who he uses to murder his wife. He relies on the reputation of a patient to take the fall for said murder of his wife. He threatens Darcy with his knowledge of her past struggles with her mental health. He purposefully leaves a patient who is a danger to others loose and able to harm a man he has tied to a bed for his “protection”. It’s so easy for him to use and abuse his patients. For him it’s like breathing. We don’t know where any of these people would be if they were with a good doctor who actually cared and wanted them to get better. Instead he has destroyed all chances these people had to get back out into the world and to live their lives better off than they were. It’s only his hubris that stops him from continuing as he has been.

But yeah, I love this movie.

"if i sound pretentious, ~welcooome~" had me dead. especially as someone who has been here for years for said "pretension"

Yes, let us address the golem in the room.

The last bit where Ted smugly rings the bell and it cuts to the bellboy spirit is genuinely one of my favorite endings of a movie. I’ve thought about it regularly since I saw it in theaters. It’s also hilarious shot with perfect comedic framing. 5/5

I don't know what it is with Irish horror films, but they just scratch a primal fear.

I think the lack of sunshine and the generational gloom makes the Irish some of the best storytellers if you want to be scared and bummed.

I saw oddity two days ago. I loved it. There's a short film on YouTube called "How Olin lost his eye" by Damian McCarthy. I want more films from him, he's very good.

That thumbnail is me when I don't get enough sleep and I gotta get up for work.

Oddity is one of those cozy movies for me.

The film is extremely Hitchcockian in its set ups. You are told there is someone else in the house with you, there is a bell that kills you when rung, there is an ever present f-off golem. It keeps you on edge

What I love the most about McCarthy's works is how intentional and well considered everything is. There's very clearly a vision of what he wants to achieve with his films (even his short films) and everything in them builds towards that vision. Nothing ever looks or sounds like it was run through a focus group, it's all a very personal nightmare that he somehow brought to life. And if you don't vibe with that then that's fine, the film wasn't made for you or you just weren't in the right headspace to appreciate it. But you can't deny that there's thought and craft in every shot and line of dialogue.

I think my favourite line in this movie was when Darcy says, "I'll have to pay for that later." In relation to Olin. Just that cool acknowledgement that yeah, she fucked up a little and is gonna have to face for that. Mind, I'm not 100% convinced Ted actually tricks her in the end. That perhaps that was Darcy going out on her own terms vs waiting for whatever fate runs her down with later. OR that IS what fate runs her down with?

I also really enjoyed the little fun moments in the film. Like the jump scares that seem very directly aimed at the characters within the film and not at me the viewer. Or that moment when Dani's ghost compels Yana to, "Run." And the bellhop at the end; which I was informed many people don't like? We don't need to see what happens, but we know something will happen, because there's that ghost right there. Mind, I actually thought the ending was going to go: Ted rings the bell, immediate hard cut to black, credits.

Whatever though. Great movie, and great video! Cheers.

Parents recommended this and when the guy popped in front of the tent I actually threw my fork lmao

It may seem "disappointing" to find Ted's motive for the murder, but it truly is a big fear for women when marrying. The "is he going to be normal and ask for a divorce or will his ego tell him it's better to kill me?". There's also been NUMEROUS murder cases in which this is the exact reasoning,  the Chris Watts case for example.

“You sound stupid” is still the best read I’ve ever heard in a movie. I think about it every day 😅

16:55 honestly if you listen to enough true crime it's wild how many people belive murder is a valid option for relationship troubles.
