Andrew Roberts, Lord Roberts of Belgravia, has spent a career studying humanity at its worst, from Auschwitz and Bucha to the kibbutzim of southern Israel. The day before this lecture, he walked Bondi Beach with Arsen Ostrovsky, who survived the December massacre, and saw how close that same old hatred had come to one of Australia's most familiar places.
Drawing on his work leading the UK parliamentary inquiry into the October 7 massacres, Lord Roberts asks why the victims have been vilified while the perpetrators were turned into heroes, and what history tells us about fighting back. He sets out a blunt agenda: rebuilding a culture of moral abhorrence, drawing a clear line between free speech and incitement, reining in social media platforms, and telling the truth about the war in Gaza.
Andrew Roberts is the author of 21 books, translated into 28 languages, including Churchill: Walking with Destiny and Napoleon the Great, and co-author with General David Petraeus of Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine. He is a fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and a member of the UK House of Lords.
Introduced and hosted by Michael Stutchbury, Executive Director of the Centre for Independent Studies, with a vote of thanks from CIS Board Member James Phillips.
