Great discussion! Looking at the issue of "social rights," as an Australian i have been shocked (for decades) by Americans lack of awareness that the "social wage" is vital. Not only does it help the most vulnerable, it means that a a health crisis or personal misfortune does not damage future life chances for the majority of people. It also facilitates social mobility.  That said, over recent decades i have been horrified to see Australia sliding towards a US model, and many people not even realising that is happening.

What an incredible pleasure to listen to the brilliant Susan Neiman in conversation with remarkable Chris Hedges. So useful to frame the current moment in its philosphical context, and such a gift to have this conversation.

The ruling class lacks a moral conscience, yet demands it from the working class.
The ruling class cares little for honesty—in fact, their position prevents them from being honest—yet they expect strict honesty from workers.
Thus, morality functions as a tool of social control: a set of rules enforced upon the poor and working class to keep them submissive.

Morality PREDATES religion.
Religion claiming appropriation over morality is not just wrong, it is pure evil to do so!
