Ah! Rag rug making. At the Colne Valley Museum that Bernadette Banner featured recently, we have a variety. You would have red in the centre as the heart of the home and the outside border would often be black to hide the grime. As a weaver, you would actually be lucky as you could make quite a few with fabric scraps. They would start in your bedroom beside the bed so your feet didn't get cold, then, as it got dirty, a new one was made and the old one gradually moved to grubbier spots until it ended up by the fire. Nothing was wasted at all in a victorian home!

The camera gag of looking at the chair and looking away is so simple and so joyous. Proper guffaw inducing. Your videos always feel like spending time with a friend (parasocial, I know, sorry), and they make getting through the work day that much better. I also genuinely appreciate your sound effect usage being much gentler on the ears than most videos. My dogs genuinely fear the stock "ding" sound (even with headphones) so it means the world to be able to watch your work knowing they won't get startled. I need to stop writing comments while still watching because this will have so many edits - former JoAnn employee, and burlap is THE WORST. I would inevitably look like I'd just gotten back from a funeral after finishing a "rustic barn wedding" order.
Unfortunately not rug-hooking related, but my favorite crafting-related history books are the Herbert Norris Fashion History series. They are my costume design bibles. He includes patterns, historical context, cultural context, fashion plates, and just. It's so fantastic both to read and to reference.

I would just like to say - your “fancy footage” of the final product always always always makes me smile but also always makes me wonder at how at ease you make what MUST be an awkward thing to do, feel.

I thought to myself “How does one pose with a lampshade and give it that old Charlie flair?”

And then you looked up at the lampshade and smiled and I immediately smiled. Like smiling at a lampshade was the most natural thing I’ll see a human do today.

I fully understand why you keep getting booked for background work, your general vibe of comfortability in strange situations like smiling at lampshades makes me feel instantly at ease.

I think this is the strangest compliment I’ve ever delivered, I hope it lands the way I want it to. 😂😂😂

No light except out the bottom of lampshade is perfect if you’re reading or writing late at night and don’t want to disturb anyone else, or if you want that quiet, winter evening, snowed-inn vibe! I could see working directly within that curve of light, a haven of peace and warm light in a dark cozy house as if the rest of the world doesn’t exist.

65 years ago my father’s cousin made me a rug hook. He made the handle also. I still have it. And it works perfectly. They were born 125+- years ago.

I hope these help:    Hook Me A Story The History & Method Of Rug Hooking in Atlantic Canada

By Deanne Fitzpatrick. ,   The Hooked Rug (1930) by William Winthrop Kent, The Hooker's Art: Evolving Designs in Hooked Rugs (1997) by Jessie A. This same technique using tulle for a lamp shade would create a really really fun lamp shade that still shone light through the shade

Brit. here.  I used to have a friend who made rag rugs with that method.  She used to ask all her friends to give her all their old Tshirts.  Seems rag rugging works well with that kind of fabric.

As a baker I’d like to let you know that you can substitute butter for brown butter but cookies typically require cold butter to bake correctly. It may have to be measured after you brown and cool it fully as well.

I'm 65, and I did rug-hooking kits as a kid in the 60s. So I've known about it for over 50 years. But more recently, I've used it to make a sniff mat for my dog. You use a thick plastic grid and tough nylon fabric. The technique is a bit different, too. You use longer strips of fabric; fold them in half, and then pull the loop through the holes with the hook (you can use a crochet hook for this); then pull the strip ends through the loop end to secure the strip in place and cut the loop. In fact, this is how I learned how to do rug-hooking in the 60s. Once you've finished the mat, you hide small treats or kibble in the nooks and crannies of the mat and let your dog sniff them out.

Thrum is the general term for all loom waste, whether cotton or wool or what have you. By the nature of looms, you're going to have some waste where the yarn ties onto the yarn, goes through the heddles etc, as well as a bit at the beginning and end of each piece of fabric where you're evening out the warp from being bunched up in the tie-on to being evenly spaced in the body of the fabric. I'm taking a weaving class right now and the classroom has a wastebasket full of yarn labeled "THRUM" in sharpie!

In the past I enjoyed hooking, fibercraft, not streetcraft.

Lol, not me identifying the sizes of the crochet hooks by sight 😅 I was like “that’s a 6.5mm, way too big, use the 2.5mm” and I was RIGHT 😂 (I’m currently using a 2.25 mm aluminum hook with worsted weight dishcloth cotton. I may have to give in and buy a steel hook instead. By the end of this project, the handle will be more bent than the hook.)

I'm studying historic textiles in grad school right now and your tangent in the middle about crafts not being valued or studied because they're "women's work" is SO REAL. Some people are trying to remedy that, but it's a slow process. Not really about rugs, but Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years by Elizabeth Wayland Barber is a great book about textiles and women's history.

I was feeling anxious and unable to focus. I turned this video on bc i hadn’t watched it yet, grabbed my crochet hook and thread to make a small quick project and just listening to Mrs Charlies helped me just level out… i mean i love your content Mrs Charlie. I love what you make how you make it and i love how you talk us through it bc you explain it in a way that my autistic brain can easily wrap around but what you dont know is that i dont just learn from you but listening to you for me is so cathartic and soothing and just listening to you helps me focus thank you for everything you do

You can replace with brown butter if you chill the dough first. The spread is because of the melted butter replacing solid butter. You may have to add water as well since you boil some off while browning the butter.

i adore the way you blend curiosity and investigation; regardless of the subject I watch everything because your approach is so engaging

Its pretty, I like it.  Its ambiance.  Maybe a taller lamp base for task lighting, or on a desk or nightstand.

I just had a memory from my grandma who did rug hooking - she had a little hand-crank machine that cut wool thrum into narrow strips for hooking. She made rugs that looked almostlike stained glass with little cells of colors surrounded by black borders.

Re: the sneezing. Probably the burlap, but could also be little bits of the knit fabric. I work with homemade t-shirt yarn a lot and the cut edges shed tiiiiiiny bits of thread where the teeny little loops of the knit have been severed. I have definitely blown my nose after working with the t-shirt yarn and found bits of blue fuzz in the tissue.
