I don't like people who take drugs

for example airport security.

A British PSA calling opium the "curse of the East" is fucking nuts. The gall

We call them controlled substances yet have 0 control over them when they are illegal.

Lets also not forget that, above all else, it'd be really funny to get to say "sorry mate, I couldn't get the gear, my dealer is on annual leave this week".

This might be a hot take but if someone's struggling with a drug addiction then I don't think throwing them in prison would help

Legalization allows for regulation which saves lives, cost reduction which reduces theft, and moves the substances out of the hands of criminals which reduces violent crime.

I'd say I'm not sure how any of this is controversial, especially considering America's history with alcohol prohibition, but people can be pretty fucking stupid.

I dunno, maybe if anti-drug messaging were actually HONEST rather than fear porn.

Honestly, the only downside for the government would be the absence of excuses to give more power to police.

That's it, I'm joining the war on drugs.

On the side of the drugs.

The only people fully against the greens policy either don't want to understand it or oversimplify it for weaponisation.

You can make the most perfectly logically valid argument for ending the war on drugs and treating addiction like a health issue, using decades and decades of scientific research as your evidence, but people would still prefer to spend several times more money so cops can arrest addicts and so city ambulances can pick up the corpses of addicts off the street. The average person has no idea what drug addiction is like. They think it is like a kid who stays up too late playing video games. They genuinely believe the addict can stop whenever they want by just deciding they won't be lazy anymore. They think addicts enjoy losing all of their relationships and losing the ability to feel any joy in life so they can live from dose to dose, as if it were permanently being on vacation. I don't think the war on drugs will ever stop until there is a cultural shift around the way addicts are viewed by society at large, and culture only seems to be getting more individualistic, paranoid and vindictive by the year, so I don't see any major drug reform to end the war on drugs any time soon.

14:35 Nixon's drug war was not based on medical science. It was a political tool for persecuting classes of opponents.

Being pretty old, I can recall, during the late 1960s, my mate's brother having a habit, and he was given a proper script from the NHS - the real stuff, not methadone - and because of that lived a pretty standard life, held down a job (as a swanky hairdresser, public facing, not hidden away somewhere) and was basically a decent bloke, paying taxes and contributing to society.

But in the 80s, when everything was much stricter, I lost a few acquaintances to drugs. So I've seen a medical attitude rather than a criminal one work in my own lifetime. And booze is a real killer - if anything, that is one drug that needs stricter controls. At least get it out of supermarkets, ffs!

Oh, and if an MP is found drunk on the job, they should be suspended immediately - Hannah Spencer should push for breathalysers at the entrance to the debating chamber in Parliament.

Traces of cocaine were found in every toilet of the house of commons and lords. Yet 96% are opposed to legalising hard drugs which includes cocaine.
Maybe it's the 4% that are responsible for those traces. But I highly doubt it. ( Punn Intended )

Speaking as someone who's witnessed the "War on Drugs" in action in the US... The war's been lost for quite some time, yet the casualties continue to pile up, the prisons continue to overflow, and the unhoused continue to suffer. So, yes, the UK and other countries should absolutely drop this failed "War on Drugs" and pursue more humane, medical science-based alternatives.

In the American states that have legalised marijuana, consumption amongst young people has actually decreased. Having easy access to it makes it less interesting, safer to experiment with, and in general less novel and exciting.

"We need our politicians to be genuinely inquisitive about finding a solution, rather than just using the whole subject matter as a way to score points."

You might as well have said that about any topic at all. And it's about as likely for any other topic, as well.

the income from taxation and the release of pressure on the prison system are reason enough

Any argument for keeping drugs illegal can easily be turned around on alcohol and tobacco. You can't argue in good faith for one but not the other

You never hear anyone say "I would try heroin, but I can't because it's against the law"

People know heroin is a dangerous substance because education is the best way to dissuade people from using it. Not its legal status.

People who start using hard drugs are not turned off because it's simply illegal.

52:18 "They've written to the past 3 home secretaries" to be fair, I think in Government they're usually allowed 28 days to respond, so they're probably still in that window.
