Tanning is back, but TikTok has somehow managed to turn it into something even more extreme: tanmaxxing.
People are deliberately chasing the highest UV index, avoiding sunscreen, using tanning beds and tanning oils, taking beta-carotene supplements and even experimenting with unlicensed tanning peptides, all in the name of getting the “perfect” tan.
And alongside it, we’re seeing some very familiar misinformation make a comeback. Sunscreen is apparently dangerous, coconut oil is a natural SPF, a “base tan” protects you from sun damage, seed oils make you burn and some people are even claiming you shouldn’t wear sunglasses while tanning!
So today we’re looking at where tanmaxxing came from, why tanning has suddenly become popular with younger generations again, the wellness and looksmaxxing communities helping to push it and what the science actually says about some of its biggest claims.
