Petra Parker: Why a Transgender Spider-Man Works

I am obsessed with Petra Parker, and not just cause I'm also trans, and she's perfect, but because she fits so well into the Spider-Man mythos that it feels like a natural extension of the character.

An internet trend so good it got me out of my writers block, I’ve been writing my own AU based on transfem spider-man (she’s called May instead of petra in my AU) for the last few days. Genuinely made me fall in love with the characters for the first time in a while

Petra Parker comics just coming out of the ether and being a total hit may just be the best thing to have graced our presence since sliced bread.

To answer the simple question: Yeah, you look good in the suit.

6:13 this artist is CIS BY THE WAY. He said he just has empathy for trans people WHICH IS FUCKING AMAZING.

I love the idea of Petra and how she became popular out of pure wholesomeness and not because people thought she was hot or something (which she is quite the cutie patatotie, but you get the point), also how people show to be so supportive over her despite being a fictional character kinda makes me feel validated in a weird way??? Idk but this is my new fav spiderman version despite being a fanmade

"Does it look good?" Furiously nodding, it looks great!

I love how JJ's consistent character trait, throughout decades, is his absolute integrity, loyalty, and dedication to the truth. Unless it involves spiderman or paying his employees a living wage xD

And I loved the more psychological and emotional aspects of Petra Parker, in terms of her being transgender, having her personal problems, and at the same time being Spider-Woman. It becomes an interesting narrative due to these difficult factors in the character's life. And I think the villain adaptation that I found coolest was the Venom from this Petra Parker universe, which ends up being a kind of abusive relationship with Venom, using Petra's insecurities and fears about being trans precisely as a form of manipulation. It's certainly one of the best fan-made alternative versions of Spider-Man.

On the topic of our friendly neighborhood trans arachind. I saw art on bluesky of a transgender spider-woman going through a drastic growth spurt after transitioning, standing like 7 feet tall due to her spider dna which I think is very cool!! (with female spiders being larger then the males of their respective species)

It’s certainly made me completely re-think the whole story, these kind of stories are a great way to be inclusive, and hopefully the younger generation will be inspired and influenced by it. Great vid ❤

I wonder if the original was inspired by Tom Holland saying The Odyssey was his last chance to play a boy.

He was talking about getting older but a lot of people thought he was about to transition.

Also, yes, the suit looks amazing.

Spider-Man is Jay Jonah Jameson's personal Dinkleburg.
That's how he defeats the bigotry that sometimes come with age; he takes all the irrational Prejudice and focuses it on one single person – NOT group – person lol

YES! THE SUIT FITS YOU!! <3

I genuinely hope this is the start of a snowball effect that will make Marvel put out an officially trans Petra Parker comic, ultimately resulting in an official Petra Parker appearance in a feature film. Though even if that doesn't end up happening, I will always remember this as a sweet moment in time for Spider-Man!

I find this art trend simply beautiful and extremely entertaining. For one thing, it encourages people to create art that I can enjoy looking at, for another, the concept is simple, works really well, and is fun.
To be honest, I’d love to see a proper story based on it in the future (a coherent narrative, not just short sketches).

I think one of my favorites is an art where she has to grapple with even more newfound strength after transitioning because "most female spiders are larger and stronger than the males" and I just love that, it's silly comic book logic that really appeals to me
