Just imagine how much more quickly the mountain pass could have been completed if the rest of the village had chipped in.

The fact that his entire village didn’t come together to take care of him in his old age after he essentially saved either their lives or that of their loved ones AND laughed at him for 22 years while he was making a tunnel through a MOUNTAIN just so they would be able to have the chance to save others the pain he felt because he couldn’t get a dr to his wife soon enough. They owe a great debt.  They should pay it.

For a history buff like me its saddening that people like Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot and hundreds like them will be remembered in books, films and history lessons while people like these deserves it so much more. Thanks for bringing light to them!

I would watch this concept as a recurring series and already want "Remarkable Unknowns, part 87"

After Maurice Hilleman's death Ralph Nader wrote, "Yet almost no one knew about him, saw him on television, or read about him in newspapers or magazines.  His anonymity, in comparison with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Jose Canseco, or an assortment of grade B actors, tells something about our society's and media's concepts of celebrity; much less of the heroic."

Regarding the soldier with all the wounds, I can’t help thinking about the Monty Python bit where the knight gets his arm cut off yells “It’s only a flesh wound!” 😂

The thing that really set Irena sender apart was her recording names and families with the goal of reuniting families after the war.  Others who saved children, especially with theb catholic church, wanted them to remain christian and hesitated to return them if families survived. There were some legal battles to that end. That doesn't take away from the fact that they were saved at great risk. But the long term view of Irena sendler makes her an incredible angel.  I also want to give a moment to the mothers who handed their babies over to this woman knowing they would likely never see them again.  That must have been unspeakable

Bro literally did a knee fall "why god" and the first thing he saw was that bloody mountain. Talk about holding a grudge, what a legend

“Frustrated by the delayed amputation, he tore off his own fingers…”

Dear God almighty thank heavens this man was on our side 😂

The world may have forgotten Irena Sendler, but the people she helped did not.  "On October 19, 1965, Yad Vashem recognized Irena Sendler as Righteous Among the Nations. The tree planted in her honor stands at the entrance to the Avenue of the Righteous Among the Nations."

Notable there is NOTHING at Montana State University to honor Hilleman other than a very small exhibit at Museum of the Rockies. Rather, its buildings are named after politicians and megadonors. Disgusting.

I love hearing Simon's voice tense as he tries to stick to the script but u can hear he's freaking out about the awesomeness ❤

The unkillable soldier got the highest award anyone could possibly get

Sabaton made a song about him

Every single one of these people needs an in depth video.

The fact that Irena sendler lost to gore shows that the Nobel peace prize means nothing

This first story broke my heart, thanks so much Simon. WE MUST NEVER FORGET!

If I remember correctly, the Japanese man survived the first atomic bomb was literally kind of being told off by his boss basically for telling tall tales when the second one hit..   it kind of reminded me when you’re a kid and you’re trying to tell your mom I didn’t move whatever it was and they find it while they’re like getting onto you for not being truthful.

I’ve watched a LOT of Simon’s videos on various channels, but this has been my favourite and its genuinely inspiring.

CAN WE GET THIS AS A SERIES PLEASE!?!!

Some dumb person: Why aren't you using your extraordinary genius?
William James Sidis: I am.
