My bag is not like other bags that prepare you for living out in the woods for a week! Nope, I'm not doing that! This bag will keep me safe if I needed to be outdoors for a few days, but it is most importantly a way to get me to safety, whether that is a hotel, a shelter, a family member's home, or driving in my car to another location.

This also puts the firemen in danger ⛔️ and not doing their real job of controlling the fire from spreading to other apartments/houses/trees that can take down an entire neighborhood.
What one chooses will depend on location, what season, what's the emergency, if you need to go on foot etc..
Having lived through one of the worst fires in history, many of us had to abandon our cars because the cars stalled as the raging fire depleted the oxygen. I always had BOB's for us, but we couldn't get home to get them! Even so they weren't suited to hike in the mountains until rescued. Our BOB's are heavier, designed for car travel, more for setting up in a parking lot, or evacuating to a shelter until better accommodation's could happen. Since then I always keep 2 get home packs no more than 15 lbs. each, in our car/truck. Of course we have emergency car kits too, but if we have to abandon our car again to get home, or to get out quick because we can't get home, our packs will get us through in a pinch.
If anyone is interested the pack we use is Swiss Gear Narrow City/ Daypack, Ballistic. I think it holds about 16 liters, has been very durable.. The packs contain a scaled down version of our BOB's. Hope we never have to use them. Blessings!
