Trump Wants EMALS Gone: Is the Navy Going Back to Steam?

President Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Navy to reverse course on aircraft carrier launch systems, directing a return to steam catapults instead of the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, used aboard the Ford-class carriers.

Why don't these guys talk about or even look into how EMALS performed on USS Ford during its extended deployment which is finally about to wind down. We have empirical data, why aren't they mentioning it?

Former Naval Officer. Current Naval Architect. I worked on the EMALS program when we beat out Northrop Grumman over 20 years ago. I left it because I didn't trust the leadership of the program at the time and thought it was doomed. I thought it would not be able to achieve the performance goals or the reliability to safely operate. I didn't want to be associated with a device that was killing airmen. Ultimately, I was wrong. Unless somebody can show me how many pilots and planes we loose due to bad EMALS launches, this debate and the President's decision is utter nonsense. As far as I know, EMALS works as advertised. I was really hoping that this discussion would yield something enlightening in the topic... sadly, it did not.

No disrespect to Uncle Jimmy, but the technology has evolved over the past 40 years. EMALS works. Swapping from EMALS to steam would be insane.

Remember that time they were launching MQ-9 and it ripped the under carriage off it? EMALS was literally designed so we could launch smaller aircraft

EMALS conducted roughly 12,000 launches during the deployement of the USS Gerald R. Ford. EMALS reportedly performed well.

If an EMP hits the aircraft carrier and knocks out the EMALS, I figure it would also knock out the electronics in the aircraft. A steam catapult is useless if there is nothing to launch.

There is a corollary to, "Just because it's new doesn't mean it's better" - Just because it has teething problems doesn't mean it won't be better. Almost all new tech has teething problems, even the designs that ultimately turn into legends. Those not directly involved (myself included) probably don't have suitable data to formulate a meaningful opinion.

This mostly sounds like the carburetor crowd dunking on fuel injection. EMALS is the superior tech for drones as well. But hey, while we're at it let's power the ships with coal.
