AIM-424 Malice: The 250-Mile Missile That Changes Air Combat?

The U.S. Navy has revealed the AIM-424 Malice, a new long-range air-to-air missile reportedly capable of engagements beyond 250 nautical miles. Developed by Raytheon, Malice is intended for 4th, 5th, and 6th-generation aircraft, with Navy imagery already showing the weapon carried by the F/A-18E Super Hornet and internally aboard the F-35C.

That puts this missile well and truely into the Radar Range of the E-7 Wedgetail, could be an interesting use.

Watched Hollings talk about this on Tuesday, and it's a 2 stage weapon. Big rocket motor to go for altitude, then glide, and then stage 2 is terminal powered guidance

To be fair to the AIM-54 being shot at max range, it’s intended targets were not maneuverable aircraft like the MiG-29 and Su-27, but large bombers like the Tu-95 Bear and Tu-22M Backfire.

11:40 I mean, if you just shoot everything that appears on your radar then yes, you won't have enough. But what if you target their support aircraft first, tankers, AWACS, and then target what ever that decided to continue the engagement without their supports, it might be enough?

So I'm guessing these are mainly for hitting awacs that stay far behind enemy fighters. The ranges on these missiles are getting longer and longer but these 5th and 6th gen fighters are so stealthy that without the help of ground based radar or awacs they aren't seeing each other until they're less than 20 miles away . I can see why we're also developing new smaller short range missiles as well.

Launching from a ship compared to a fighter jet flying X speed at X altitude would decrease the range signifcantly, which kind of goes against the whole marketing of the missile they're selling.
