NO YOU ARE RIGH THO!!! She literally defines everything I myself couldn’t have the courage to write into songs. That’s how good she is. If you’re a creative, you get what I mean.

The scariest lyric in this album has to be "and i could try convincing you they're just intrusive thoughts, but you've seen me truly happy so you know right now im not" such a scary and real thought, this person that know you, the real you... is breaking your heart which is why she is struggling to believe it.

The biggest critique I’ve seen of this album is the lyrics are too simple or “childish” and I think this stems from this pandemic of big words = good writing. No it’s just pretentious and trying so hard to be complex to hide the multiple flaws and failure in storytelling. This album understands that “less is more”, it uses simple words to carve as deep as possible and understanding each song and understanding how the true emotions feel and being raw is true good writing
My favorite lyric from OR3 is, “I’m a penny in a fountain” and “I’m an anchor in the ocean.”
“I’m a penny in a fountain” the penny is a tool USED to grant wishes and desires, but being a tool, it never gets the wishes and fufillment it wants.
“I’m an anchor in the ocean” as an anchor you are the one forced into the rubble to well, anchor, someone’s emotions and grant stability while driving yourself into the floor and drowning in the ocean.

olivia's choice to release drop dead and then the cure before the whole album felt so smart to me. it built up anticipation in the question, "what happened?" and when we finally get to the end of the album you listen to how doomed she was from the start. i've been wanting to point this thought of where OR3 reminds me of hadestown ("and we're going to sing it again" ifykyk) and overall tragedy so i love this video so much!!

we’re getting feddddd

Absolutely loved your analysis. It really is astonishing that OR has that level of self awareness at 23. I agree 100% that the seeds of destruction are woven into even the happiest songs. Olivia paints a picture of someone who is codependent, not a whole person who can look to herself for validation and happiness. WE can be happy that she’s still alive and maturing, and we have another album to look forward to down the road.

This is a masterpiece.
It perfectly sums up what I was feeling but couldn't exactly explain.
This whole album feels like it's meant for a stage.

Your analysis also helped he understand why I found drop dead stupid song and honey bee kinda unsettling. Because everyone keeps saying how they are beautiful love songs and how honeybee is a great wedding song but there is something about them that makes my stomach drop. And your description of the foreshadowing hit the nail on the head.

In drop dead she says how she is feeling paranoid, she uses the word stalking (which I know is common language but it DOES also have a different very intense meaning) etc. all her descriptions can be interpreted as happy and in love or as kinda manic and obsessive.
And she never actually says that much about him. Only that he likes music and books, but that's not a personality. Or she describes how she feels around him but not what makes her feel so derailed.
So from the beginning it feels like she put this fantasised version of a person on a pedestal and as a listener you get this feeling that this person can only fail this expectation, while the protagonist can only be disappointed.

So even in drop dead, the happiest, most "innocent" of the songs there are inklings of the flaws of you loll at the lyrics through a different lense

I INSTANTLY CLICKED ON THIS VIDEO!!!!!

This is my introduction to you and i’m in awe

ugh the amount of times ive cried to this album is crazy i suffered a breakup exactly like she portays in yspsfagsil and its crazy to me how relatable it is godlivia the queen you are

a literary approach to this album is exactly what it deserves!! it's become one of my favorite albums ever, and i love this analysis so much

This is such a good analysis!!! The part about tragic "waste" was especially interesting and like you said it's so perfectly exemplified by cigarette smoke. That chilling bridge, where she repeats "why'd i try at all", right on the last track, was so heartbreaking. This album is so intentional and my favourite part abt it is that it feels like an experience all the way through, it asks the listener to sit with it for an hour and feel all of it

this album has a better structure than my essay for igcse english first language 😭😭

I always wondered what the original concept of purple was before they broke up. She did say she made a few changes after they split

Update: she just released the demo of purple the ORIGINAL version !!!

The way I stopped everything I did

I’ve only heard one song and was like “ehhh ok” but your thorough and thoughtful video has really inspired me to give the whole album a chance💙💗

Beautifully stated. The Cure is my fave from the album. Love your vids!
